John W looks older in that photo than I had envisioned him.

ern,
I've used that avatar elsewhere, others here may have seen it. My favorite singer, Al Bowlly 1899-1941.
He would have been 35 in that photo (ed. avatar is now different) which is a still from a Pathetone short film, where he's singing 'The Very Thought Of You' in 1934. Here's a clip from his hit record of that song for HMV with Ray Noble's band in England that year.

Where can you hear Al Bowlly on Radio 2? Most weeks on Malcolm Laycock's Sunday night show, and occasionally on Desmond 's show or Russel Davies' show, and a rare possibility on Parky.
Lots of clips of Al at Amazon and such places, probably over 100 CDs feature him (1930's and swing music), and his voice can be heard on the soundtrack of many films e.g. 'The Shining', 'Withnail And I' and many others. He recorded over 1000 records in 14 years - I have about 500 in some form or other.
He died during an enemy raid on London, 17 April 1941.
