Seems such a shame they are unlikely to be able to be around to celebrate their centenary. So close but yet so far. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Yes...it is a shame that,Lord
This is the blurb from the Radio Times about the programme
At the end of November Woolworths' 815-store business went into administration. Listening to this gloriously nostalgic documentary makes such an event seem like a vicious rumour: at one point Woolies was opening a shop every three days and was at the heart of every British town. The comfortably familiar voice of Brian Matthew guides us through a highly successful part of the store's commercial history - its own-brand popular music recordings, where a cover version could be bought for sixpence. The feel-good factor goes into overload when Vera Lynn gives a word-and-note-perfect version of Up the Wooden Hill to Bedfordshire, her first recorded singing performance for 18 years - now that's the wonder of Woolworths.
Music from from A Bowlly and Al Jolson,too..will be giving this a listen |
