Quote: | Rail unions are worried that train companies will start cutting services as the recession starts to bite. National Express has already announced that it is to cut 300 jobs. Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT union, discusses his fears over the future of the transport network. |
______________
This will be a blow for those who travel all the time. Also there would be overcrowded carriages which could be a health and safety nightmare. |

Many rail services were actually improved in the autumn/winter timetable revisions, which were obviously planned before the recession hit.
Most of the current rail operators paid heavily for the new round of franchises and need full trains to make anything like a decent return, hence the above-inflation rate fare increases. They did also provide a commitment to improving services and capacity, but if the recession triggers a significant fall in passenger numbers it is a certainty that they will go back to the government to renegotiate, and cut back. _________________ Ron |
