And on 6 music, things are just as bad over there too. If it's a speciality / documentary show, then fair enough, a celeb that specialises in that field would be the obvious choice to present it. But I still don't understand why have them just playing at being a DJ when there are plenty of radio DJs out there would love a shot at the big time. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

But what, exactly, is a "celebrity" exactly? British radio has been built on celebrities - recording, music hall or band-leading stars - since its earliest days.
After all, wasn't the great Jimmy Young (who had a long and respectable career on R2) a "crooner" who came to radio after his halcyon days as a best-selling performer came to an end?
What about Desmond Carrington (as another example)? He was a small-part film actor in the 1940s and 50s.
And even Jeremy Vine is a "broadcast journalist", having spent his pre-R2 career in BBC News and Current Affairs with Newsnight, etc.
So - please explain. |

To me it is people who have come from doing other things who seem to have been given shows because they are famous rather than for their talent or knowledge of music. The latter being virtually not existant with some of them. For example Jonathan Ross, Chris Evans, Alan Carr, Paul O'Grady, Russell Brand, Dale Winton, Elaine Paige and Sarah Kennedy. I know I am hard to please but I grew up with pirate radio and when you have had the best, everything else pales into insignificance!
In my view the music is more important than the presenter, it shouldn't be talked over or interrupted and why bother playing something and not tell people who it was/what it was. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I too grew up with pirate radio - Caroline, BigL, RNI and then Caroline again in the 70s - but I still enjoy a range of presenters from different backgrounds. You only have to look at vthe line-up of the original Radios 1 and 2 in late 1967 to see what a rag-bag of people - many of whom came from the wider "entertainment" industry - there was in the line-ups (Radio 1 included). Nothing new, therefore.
I'd actually single out Dale Winton in your list, too; he's a very knowledgeable person where popular music is concerned, having cut his teeth since the mid 70s as a lowly-paid club DJ. His knowledge of 60s/70s soul is superb, even if it's not generally acknowledged.

Yes but, to be fair, that's merely a question of style for each individual presenter rather than a comment about mere "celebrity presenters". |
