G20 Summit begins this week. Top leaders from the 20 richest nations attend the global summit in London. ( We are still one of the richest? ). People who work around the area where it's been told to wear casual clothing. A big police operation is underway with Barrack Obama muscle men sweeping the capital. I just hope there is no trouble and damage, as there is no call for it. I think peaceful demonstration is fine to put you point of view over.

I'm confused by the above, Mark. Please explain.

Well, those who feel they have cause to demonstrate will disagree, I guess, but whatever...

Trouble is the world's press love a good riot. It makes good copy in print and footage on TV. If it's too quiet the media will ignore it. So if you want to get an important message across you have to create a newsworthy event. That, sadly, is the way of the world, especially in these media-orientated times. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

We don't need too see Violence in London. It's absolutely disgraceful. I hope those who were captured smashing windows will be arrested and heavily fined? |

Who's "we"? Are you now the voice of everyone?
Some people will consider that some or all of the protesting groups (and there are lots of different groups, each with their own identifiable aims) have a just reason to be protesting at world leaders who just don't appear to be addressing the real problems that face us.
Whilst I only support peaceful protest (and I've taken part in a few peaceful protests in my time), I do recognise that the only way such issues reach the mass audience via the press is on occasions such as these. It's a pity, but that's the way it is. The press - largely the tabloids - only seem interested in trivial stories and celebrity gossip most of the time (because their readers are suckers, perhaps?) and they tend only respond to key issues when they're hit in the face with them.
That said, I'm in central London all day on Friday and I hope that I can get on with things unhindered! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I don't care. It's a bloody disgrace. As I said " How embarrassing the UK may look now" Gordon Brown must be very angry. |

A joke on a website today -

Rubbish. Anti-establishment protests (even riotous ones) have taken place in all major cities of the world for decades and sometimes with good reason. And who cares if Gordon Brown is angry? That's the whole point, isn't it? Surely he can't be feeling any different to the riots that would be taking place in Paris were the summit to be taking place there? Ok, so Nicolas Sarkosy would then be feeling angry too. That privilege comes with the job.

I don't like being represented by sweeping generalisms. What's wrong with that - and what has it to do with jealousy for heaven's sake?

I know two people who were demonstrating (peacefully) today. They don't have jobs either - because their employers have both gone into administration. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Thinking thats a good point about what are these people doing on the streets, when the economy is in a bad state, and people should be looking for work or earning money? Those who have got jobs and were involved in the trouble should be sacked if they have a job, or their dole stopped?
I could be harsh, but looking at most of the pictures some are probably unemployed, live in rough areas or had a troubled child hood because their parents don't care. |

Perhaps because they want to? Perhaps because they are concerned more about issues of a failure of capitalism and a need to raise the debate? The fact that my two friends' former employers have gone into administration is largely due to the utter incompetence of those who have managed our financial systems and of the senior politicians aho allowed it to happen. So by adding their voices to the protest against these failed values perhaps people are doing what it their right.

I'm sure that lots of people who were at the demos did have jobs from which they took time off as well. You're just stereotyping. Some people do have principles, as opposed to those who run our financial system who seem to have none.

How on earth can you tell that from the images that the media has chosen to give you. I wouldn't mind betting that lots of peaceful protesters are very intelligent and more aware of the core issues than lots of others.
Don't make up your mind on the basis of stereotypes, Mark. That's exactly what the mainstream media want of you. That's why this story has been covered in the way it has. I haven't see evidence of unbiased debate of all the central issues in the tabloids - have you? _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Interesting to see that Russell Brand took part in the demonstrations yesterday. When cornered by a TV commentator and asked what exactly he was protesting about, he looked wildly about, for all the world like a frightened rabbit, and then lamely protested" "Look I'm just participating, mate". I wonder how many others were "just participating".
Bit like the quote from some earnest young woman who when asked why she was there claimed "I want to be part of the solution, not the problem".
For all the world like an animated "sound byte fest". _________________ Minx

MIS-Agreed!
Russell Brand may have been at the demos to get some material for his stage act.
'So, I said to the anarchist, I love your look, have you got a sister?' |
