Radio caroline continued intermitently for some years, but what I remember from my teenage years in the 70s was Radio Luxemburg.. that was very big at the time. thben capital & LBC came on air & took over!

Radio Caroline returned in 1974 from the Mi Amigo, moored in the Thames Estuary. It was then an "album station" with not much advertising to support it and presenters were a bunch of hippies. I liked it actually, very laid back and sounding great in the summer.

LBC and Capital started in London in 1973, and Caroline was a good contrast if you lived in the south east.

Luxembourg was very much a pop station in 208 metres, though I used to tune in to listen to people like David Kid Jensen, Stuart Henry and Mark Wesley.

JW's saturday show is very reminiscent of his late-night shows on Caroline, circa early 1967 actually. Of course, it all came to an end on that fateful day of August 14th, 1967 (athough Caroline carried on for a while, with Johnnie being the first DJ to broadcast illegally).

Also in the South we listened to Radio Northsea International after the Marine Offences Act came in to force and Radio Caroline eventually had gone. Some of us vowed never to listen to Radio One and I never did!

I recall Kid Jensen & Stuart Henry also. I just can't recall which station had that country show- it was on AM.
Capital radio alo had a country show at one time with Dave Cash.

Does anyone tune in to the Bjg L on the net? I tuned in a few times. It is very much inspired by that whole pirate radio era

I'm not at the pc enough to listen to Big L on a regular basis but I'm hoping to get one of these WiFi radios later and listen more often...

Ready and waiting for JW tonight - finger on the record button... Laughing
"Oh Carol" by the Stones... can anybody sit still to this type of music? Laughing love it.

I remember Johnnie playing that a few times while he did the Drivetime show, including his return from extended sick leave. It's certainly a great cover of a Chuck Berry track.

Chuck Berry... we could use some more Chuck Berry on the radio! what a performer!
I often have an inkling to hear "My Ding-a-Ling"... I really do. The guitar sound is great and of course it reminds me of my hippyish youth...

Wonder if JW will play "Days of Pearly Spencer"?? Laughing

I love the old style jingles.. they certainly added to the vibe of the station and were fun!
They make today's jingles ( does Radio 2 use them now?? Confused ) sound very bland Rolling Eyes

What a shame that show isn't available on 'Listen Again' (I've just tried!) I must try and remember to listen next Sunday.

I've just re-checked that and it is on 'listen again'. I must remember to have a listen to it tomorrow morning. It must be one of those that has some kind of delay before it's available to listen again. Here's the link. Not sure if it's the same for every show. This is certainly for 8th Feb show: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0023mfx

One of my favourites to end the show, All My Loving. I think he played this for me when he did the Pirate show on BBC Essex. Very Happy

I think he used to sign off with it before he went on shore leave and play Be My Baby as his first on his return ( or the other way round!)

I shall have to Listen Again at my leisure during the week; the tracklisting looks fab.

The Quarrymen track was taken from the Beatles Anthology Vol 1

I remember Dave Cash's Canadian accent being quite enough to get used to - Emperor Rosko's American jive was well nigh inpenetrable. Oddly, I notice his wiki entry makes no mention of his tenure at Radio London.

Reception of Radio London was always the best of the pirates (It had the most powerful transmitter) and was therefore my station of choice. Dave Dennis at lunchtime (when he was off on leave Mike Lennox took his place - his theme was Herb Alpert's I'm Getting Sentimental Over You) and Kenny & Cash at teatime.

Johnnie's recreation of those times is far too polished, though. Although we look back on those days with fondness the presentation was sometimes quite ramshackle, and even Kenny Everett's humour quite contrived. Some of the jingles and trailers he produced appear on an album "We Love The Pirates" and they're awful.

That said, the present Big L isn't even a pale shadow of its former namesake.

Someone mentioned Radio Luxemburg. I remember trying to listen to that on my tiny transistor radio under my pillow at night. It would be fine for about ten minutes and then would start to fade then come back up, but all distorted, and so on. American Forces Network used to encroach its space - constant baseball commentaries! Eventually I'd give up and go to Radio 4, where there'd be a comic thing like I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again if I was lucky, The Men From The Ministry if I wasn't, and Book at Bedtime.

I think you're right. One thing that tends to be forgotten is that half the time the DJs were either stoned, drunk or bored - and often all three. I also think that Kenny Everett is over-rated as a boundary-pushing broadcaster - even though he did indeed come up with some gems. I often found his humour a bit childish although some of his multi-track sound mixing was genius and eway ahead of its time. The content was still often rubbish.

This was borne out by the later phase of his "Captain Kremmen" slots on Capital Breakfast - DJ Mike Smith once commented: "Are we actually paying for this rubbish?".

RockitRon wrote:

It was set up by Ray Anderson, a one-time Caroline man whose East Anglian Productions in Frinton produced many jingle and ad packages for the pirates. He produced all the classic Caroline jingles of the 1970s including the "Loving Awareness" stuff. BigL is now run from above a shop in Frinton High Street with their two main "name" DJs being Mike Read and David "Diddy" Hamilton. Wow...

I notice that they've disappeared from the Sky EPG as well, even though Caroline holds onto Channel 199, which must be a blow.

Rosko was never on Radio London.

I agree with the comment about Kenny Everett. Used to love him on Big L with Dave Cash...thought him less good on onshore radio - and awful on TV.

I thought Rosko was probably the most exciting Pirate to listen to back in the day.. with JW close behind mainly because I loved to listen to his Frinton headlight flashing show in bed!
Can't agree that Kenny was awful on TV though.. I recently listened to his Video Show on an audio cassette I recorded from the TV and it was really genuinely funny in my book. I liked his Captain Kremmen spots too! Laughing

I thought Everett's first TV series (for Thames TV) called The Kenny Everett Video Show was really innovative and clever. It was made all the more so because of the off-camera laughter of studio crew members, which never happened before.

Of course, the use of the word "video" in the context of television was new, too; I thought his later series - now called the "Kenny Everett Television Show" - was nowhere near as funny.

I have some off-air recordings of Kenny & Cash (the Radio London lunchtime show) and they seem really dated now but of course at the time they were really popular and funny simply because they were so unpredictable.

I always remember Everett playing an acetate of the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper LP on BigL even before even execs at EMI had heard it. Nothing to do with Paul McCartney being a close buddy of course!

Great tunes again tonight, really enjoying the show! Rock on, Johnnie!

Interesting to hear him mention the '67 Act tonight, the one that brought an end to (most of) the Pirate stations. I wonder how he'll cover this in the remaining shows?

Did you know that you can see Johnnie doing this show if you click on the pirate webcams link, then select 'LV18'. You can also get a streaming webcam (watch & listen) if you click here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/essex/local_radio/pirate_bbc_essex/

I think next week's is the last one but after the ending I wonder if tonight's will be the last one?

Yes, I'm wondering that too. If it is, then I hope Johnnie will do another series sometime. Well anyway, Emporer Rosco is currently on Pirate Essex.

I noticed in the Radio Times a few weeks ago that it was now increased to eleven shows. I'm glad it was as he played our request last night, I'm over the moon. Hubby taped it for me as I was still at work!

It was a good one but sad that it's last of the series.

Helen, are you sure it is the last one? The Radio Times says part 10/11. I agree it did sound like it was the last one though.

Angela, Ian

The last one is a documentary on Carole King with Johnnie according to the schedule page on the annoyingly frustrating to use new R2 website.

I've been listening to some of the other Pirate radio broadcasts from BBC Essex over the weekend. Great music but some of the DJs not so. Makes you realise just how good JW is! Rosko and Dave Cash haven't lost it though.

The link is here if you get time to listen and there is a live webcam if you choose the watch and listen one.
