The Telegraph has recently been running a series of letters on people with famous names and the pros and cons of being called Gordon Brown, Harold Wilson etc if you're an ordinary member of the public. Sarah Kennedy has been mentioning this series.
In my time in the NHS I came across a General Practitioner called Paul Burrell, medical students called Patrick Moore and Michael Crawford and a receptionist called Grace Kelly.
Have you got any similar instances to relate?
Ian. |

When I was a child there was curate at our church called Tommy Steel. My friend's father was the one of he church wardens, and when he visited the house on one occasion, my friend had the record player all rigged up to play 'Little White Bull' as he walked into the living room. He was a young chap and took it all well but he certainly had his leg pulled a few times over his name!

Whenever the reporter Andy Bell is on Channel 5 News, I keep expecting him to sport a close-fitting leotard like the Erasure singer of that name!
I also did a doubletake when This Morning had a reporter called Steve Wilson - surely Porcupine Tree's main man hadn't fallen on hard times? _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

I once had the joy of taking part in a meeting with Clive James and Paul Newman. Neither of them were remotely amused by this.
And I was at school with Dick Whittington. |

I know an Amy WHITEHOUSE from Remploy in Leeds.
I bet she's fed up of people singing 'Rehab' at her! There was also a customer called KERMIT I. Sinclair at the bank where my sister worked, around the time the Muppets were on TV.
In Leslie Bricusse's autobiography, he tells of his father knowing someone who worked for the Chelsea football team at the time, called Harold Hastings. I don't think the man lived to see the Hastings Insurance TV ads, but the Harry Hastings character singing 'Hastings Direct Dot Co -o-om!' came to my mind. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

BBC Breakfast News were discussing the current cabinet's expenses row and a representative called George Jones was on.
Unlike his country singer namesake*, he seemed to be there on time.
*nicknamed 'No Show Jones' for the amount of cancelled gigs he racked up. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

The MP Dr. Liam Fox appeared on a previous BBC Breakfast and the interviewer kept saying, 'Now, Dr. Fox...'
This caused hoots of laughter on this end as the Doctor Fox known in this house was Neil Fox, who used to present the ILR singles chart show and was a judge on 'Pop Idol'.
I bet Liam Fox was fed up of people singing 'Doctor, doctor FOX! Ner-ner-ner-ner!' down the phone! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

There was also a crossword clue that went 'Magician, real name William Wallace'.
The answer was Ali Bongo. If he'd been beginning when Braveheart came out he'd have been fed up of people saying 'You will never take away my freedom...' _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Just remembered that, whe I worked for the NHS Trust, we used to have an auditor called Damon Hill.
Somewhere in the system there was also a Michael Jackson.

A Michael Jackson in the NHS - was he a specialist in plastic surgery?
Every time the MP Andrew McKay is mentioned in the context of the expenses row on the news, I keep expecting some of the money to have gone towards a Roxy Music reunion tour, or the remastered Rock Follies soundtrack CDs!
There was also a General Sir John Hackett on TV a lot at the time of the Falklands conflict. Around the same era I was going to see Steve Hackett's concerts in Leeds and elsewhere, and his brother, John, sometimes worked on stage with him. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

On 'Room 101' (Virgin 1), Lorraine Kelly nominated Scottish stereotypes. Paul Merton illustrated this by running a clip from The White Heather Club, in which Andy Stewart and another presenter sang a song that went; 'I'm Andy McKay, and Sandy McKay...'
First time I saw this, I wondered why Andy Stewart was taking the Roxy Music sax player's name! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Lost In Translation's on TV next week, and Bill Murray's character in this is called Bob Harris! He doesn't exactly whisper so much.
I also remember a cop show Patrick Mower was in called 'Target'. His character was a detective called Steve Hackett - it was on the telly when his Genesis namesake released 'Please Don't Touch'.
The movie 'To Kill A Mockingbird' was on TV one week, and when Gregory Peck, as Atticus Finch, says 'I'm here to defend Tom Robinson', it was surely an excuse to say 'Bully For You' wasn't that bad!' (The song was a co-write with Peter Gabriel, and when the two toured together, one review was headed 'One sings, the other doesn't'.) _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

On the National Lottery Midweek Draws, one Matt Chamberlain was assigned to be the drawmaster.
I know Tori Amos's UK tour dates are pretty stingy, but why is her tour drummer releasing the balls? _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

How many viewers of 'Hope Springs' thought of the Associates lead singer when a character called Billy MacKenzie was mentioned?
I know I was thinking of 'Party Fears Two'. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
