Can someone tell me (in simple terms) how to upload photos to this site. I tried the r2ok route advised in the Admin Section, with no success. I tried through Picasa Google but the published link divulges too much information about the source, (ie name, email address etc - not that I have anything to hide Laughing

). Any help appreciated, but remember - I am not a techie in these matters.

The version of the board software being used here is quite old and, as you say, doesn't facilitate image upload direct to the server. The most recent version of phpBB does, and I'm surprised that it hasn't been updated (it's much more secure for a start) but even so you shouldn't have a problem linking to an externally-hosted image source.

If you're using Picassa, all you need to do is to select the photo and click the "Link to this photo" dropdown, which will give you the option of either an HTTP link or HTML "embed" link. The latter is no good because the board will block the insertion of any HTML into posts (for security reasons) but by copying the first link and then pasting it here you should be OK.

What you need to do:

1. Copy the HTTP link from Picassa (or wherever) but NOT the "Embed" link.
2. Type [img] This is the OPENING TAG
3. Now paste the HTTP link you copied - the source of the image
4. Then type [/img] This is the CLOSING TAG and MUST contain the foreward-slash otherwise it won't work.

The "img" tag will tell the forum server to run off and get the image from the location you've given it and display it into the page here.

It's very important that you provide a closing "img" tag as well (as described in step 4) otherwise it won't work.

You certainly won't see any personal meta data being exposed.

The method posted by colby is good for images that are already on the internet somewhere.

If you have a picci on your own computer (e.g. that you took with your camera) then the preferred 'upload' method is to use Photobucket and then do a link to the image there.

OK Colby? But when I try to use "preview on the R2OK post a reply screen, nothing happens. I just see the printed link. And no doubt when I submit this it will probably be the same.

I've just tried it and it works, minx, but I think you have to go to the original website, not one which has reproduced it, like google.

Great photo Ron! Over on Coffee Bar (Kit Kat Moment) I've actually managed it But I've fiddled with it so long I am not quite sure how! Laughing

It's only a link though. And it's through Picassa.

I tried with R2 photobucket site John W and it went as far as going through the upload process and then said "error in file type" and failed.

Will keep on trying.

I just borrowed an image off John Deere's website there.

I don't usually have any problems uploading photos from my PC to photobucket. There is a fairly extensive Help section.

John is right. The image link you created is a "dynamic" link (ie: not a real link to a real file but one which has been created as a sort of temporary signpost) so go right back to the actual file on Picassa, Photobucket or whatever.

I had the same hassle in the past as you Minx... I tried using photobucket with no success! Laughing

I'm really busy right now (even for Ebay and that's saying something..) and, I'm still using my laptop whilst standing up in our kitchen which isn't great.
My other pc's still have issues after my switch over to Broadband, in fact, my older machine using Windows ME is now in the skip after it played up once too often.
When I get my newer pc running correctly and upstairs on my desk I'll have a serious attempt at downloading a pic or two...
By the way, our pup is now 20 weeks old and as of this morning she weighs nearly 5 stone!! Confused

Having just got broadband I decided it would be a good time to set up a photobucket account as its a lot easier to upload photos now. Hopefully you should be able to see a photo of one of the Tall Ships which I took in Belfast yesterday.

BTW the ship in the photo is HMS Bounty - as featured in Mutiny on The Bounty, and more recently in Pirates of The Caribbean.

I opened the photo on photobucket and right clicked to get the properties

It wouldn't work at first because I had some numbers/letters after the jpg extension, but I removed them.

I'm so pleased it worked in the end. We return to France mid September to take the boat to its winter moorings in Castelsarrasin before end October, when the canals shut down for the winter. Hopefully there will be more "golden light" for more photos then, as we are both keen snappers. (And hopefully I won't forget how to upload them) Wink

This is the Santa Fe #3751 at Union Station in Los Angeles just prior to boarding..
Note the height of this engine in relation to onlookers compared to the "Tornado" in Norwich on Friday..

Hello SFF.

I'm no train buff but yes, a nice pair of photos and comparison of the two locos. The Santa Fe is one heck of a beast, the new Tornado looks much more compact, neat, functional, and dare I say it the very model of British understatement.

Hi Ron, yes, I said the same thing to US steam fans I had the opportunity to speak to. British locomotives appear much more simplistic and possibly more pleasing to the eye for most people.

I wasn't a particular "Fan" of British Railways as a kid as most of our toy trains were American plus, the first locomotive I took "serious" notice of was a sister to this one - the 3759.
It's only in the last few years I've come to admire the design and undoubted superior build quality of the UK locomotives.

I was lucky enough to have a personal tour of the 3751 back in 2006 and the crew there couldn't believe I hadn't been to the museum in York. Embarassed

They were very complimentary about UK steam.

I'd imagine the US designers opted for ease of maintenance as the majority of pipework, valves and equipment is mounted externally on most US engines. The 3 cylinder set up on many UK locos including the Tornado was soon dropped by our US counterparts due in part to complicated maintenance procedures.

I had a quick look at some minor comparisons between the two engines for fun..

The Tornado measures 73' overall and is 13' high.
It produces approx 2000Kw in power.
49 original "Peppercorn" Pacific class locos were built in 1948/49
Distance from London to Edinburgh by train is 323 miles.

3751 measures 109' overall and is 16' high
It produces 3750 Kw in power
Built in 1927
Distance from Los Angeles to Chicago (used on this route) 2,250 miles.

Those uploading images here are gently reminded that full-sized images will play havoc with devices that have smaller screens and throw out page formatting. My wife uses a 10" Netbook and it's impossible to view the pics without a lot of fiddling.

It's always a good idea to optimise images down to less than 1024 pixels horizontally; that's the most common screen resolution these days.

PS: SFF - fabulous pics. The US locos might have the "big brute" look about them but the British locos are more beautiful!
