Lovely, sweet, British Victoria Plums have reached the stores, greengrocers, markets etc.

There is supposed to be a bumper crop this year, four times the yield of last year, helped by the colder winter and wetter spring/summer.

Enjoy.

This is unbelievable
http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/UK-Plum-Growers-Warn-Bumper-Harvest-Going-To-Waste-As-Supermarkets-Favour-Cheaper-Foreign-Imports/Article/200908315366569

The British Victoria is far superior to the imported cannonballs which the likes of Asda and Tesco are favouring (I do know that Sainsbury and M&S have Victorias, though they're twice the price of the market stall).

It would be tragedy indeed if they were to go the way of the Jersey Tomato. Tomatoes were once the island's main agricultural crop, until one year when the growers had to plough them all into the ground because they were outpriced. This year they have also been grumbling about Jersey Royal potatoes, because there was an over-supply and they didn't cover their costs.

Only last week the Government was encouraging us to be more self-sufficient in food. As usual, big business is singing from a different hymn sheet Rolling Eyes

Dunno about plums but I'm already picking apples down here in West Wales.
