The subject of old sweets and chocolate bars often comes up whilst talking to others and our wash up lady brought me in some "Sweet Tobacco" last week after I wondered if it was still available.. very nice too albeit about one million calories..
But today, somebody mentioned "Imps"... Mrs SFF said they were Liquorish flavour whilst I thought they were Minty or even Aniseed flavour?
I remember they came in a little box with an Imp on the front but who's right?
I know I could Google but resisted... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

It isn't old but I happily rediscovered tablet during my recent Scottish holiday.
It's kind of like fudge but crumbles very easily.

They must be the ones Rach although I too remember different packaging..
Looks like I was wrong and they were indeed Liquorish flavour.. maybe I was thinking of Fisherman's Friend... now they were powerful! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

My wife swears by Jakeman's throat sweets,

Sainsbury's sell them, which makes her
As for butter tablet, I remember that as a child. So sweet - it's sugar, condensed milk and butter (some recipes substitue some of the sugar with golden syrup) _________________ Ron |

I'm pretty sure that they were in a little tin, Santa, and they were quite strong... a bit like chewy Tunes... |

I seem to recall it was a blue and white tin. And when you'd finished them, the tin retained the aroma for ages. _________________ Minx

I thought it was a yellow tin with a red and black Imp on it! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Maybe I'm thinking of "Tics" then. Not the minty Tic Tacs you get now. _________________ Minx

Is tablet the same recipe as Caramac? I've often had Caramac even though it is mainly condensed milk and bad for my teeth. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

No. Although the ingredients are the same they taste quite different.
Caramac is smooth, like caramel flavoured white chocolate. Quite sickly.
Tablet is closer to fudge, but melt-in-the-mouth rather than chewy. You can taste the butter and you can tell that it is made with granulated sugar.

(The point the recipe makes about cane sugar is also very pertinent) _________________ Ron |
