This looks promising--a 5 part series on Fridays at 7pm from 20 November on the golden age of British bandleaders, starting with Bert Ambrose. Even better, our old mate Brian Matthew is hosting it. I'll certainly be giving it a try. John Wright, are you reading this?

Now that is EXACTLY what Radio 2 should be doing. I bet Brian Matthew doesn't get even 10% of Ross and Evans' salaries!

Yes I'm glad that Brian Matthew accepted the presenter job. I was in correspondence with the writer and have provided some material but don't know if it will be used.
Four bands will be the subject of the shows: Nov 20th (Bert Ambrose), 27th (Roy Fox), Dec 4th (Jack Hylton), Dec 11th and 18th (Lew Stone).
Lew Stone's wife is still alive and recent interviews with her actually started the whole project off. I met her once in 1978 when she was a mere 66!

I'll have to listen again, but there was a problem with the Hylton episode, it wasn't the finished product and there were several missing 'bits' which should have identified speakers, like Billy Munn. The producer Roy Oakshot has posted a very disapppointed apology on another forum.
The first programme about Ambrose, the uninformed listener will have found the programme interesting. I enjoyed it, though I recognised most of the stories as already appearing in a book on the subject written by Sid Colin years ago, so for me anyway nothing new in the programme. But as it is aimed at listeners who don't know the subject, it was OK.
As the programmes are only half an hour long we only get bits of music, a few bars from records, and listeners are not told what songs are played, so that is all a bit untidy.
Brian Matthew is excellent as always, a great presenter who ensures the programmes are listenable.
I very much enjoyed the second programme (Nov 27th), on Roy Fox, it's quite amazing how much information is crammed into these half-hour programmes, like four decades of a career! It was good that they featured so much of Fox's interview with Hubert Gregg, though it would have been nice if they'd said when the interview occurred.
Although the music featured is just snippets I thought the Roy Fox choices featuring Al Bowlly and Denny Dennis were good and I'm pleased to say they used the Sid Bickman vocal item 'Swaller Tail Coat' track that I had re-mastered for one of my webcasts earlier in the year, apparently it's a rare record that the Beeb couldn't find.
