I put the six O'clock news on tonight and what was the most important subject of the day? Big Brother, I despair.
Oh, and a refund of the licence fee would be nice too. |

There was a time when 'auntie' was above all this stuff but not anymore, I'm not impressed at all, in fact I'm quite peed off.

Yep, heard that one on the 0600 R2 news this morning. Nearly cut myself shaving as I did a doubletake at the radio in the bathroom.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

So there I was reading my new copy of "Healthcare Business" and I find a feature called "5 of my less than favourite things" by some Chief Executive.
and Number 1 was -
"The BBC. Despite £1.8 billion of licence payers' money, the corporation is constantly dumbing down it's news and current affairs output.
It has lost the ability to be independent and is too full of presenter egos rather than informative journalists"

And me. Breakfast this week has had puff pieces about £19 Asda suits and how to make porridge. I still can't understand why they need to plonk the weather people out in the Blue Peter garden in the dark or have reporters standing outside the likes of 10 Downing Street or the Home Office at six in the morning when there's clearly ab zero going to happen. Is it just to prove that the Beeb can still do OBs?
Someone tell me that there must be more 'proper' news to report instead of porridge, cheap suits, Lembit Opik and his Romanian squeeze plus Rick Stein's pooch passing away.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

It's horrible for Rick that his beloved pet has passed away and I do feel for him but it's not really news is it. |

and....
why do presenters feel they have to emphasise dates and figures so much?
I just heard the 10 o'clock news reporting the proposed BBC licence increase which will be raised to £150 by
"Two... Thousand... and....Twelve..." ! like we have to have it in...sepaerate...syllables... to understand, even though the date is on the display behind them.
The very worst offender of this is that Dekland chap on the BBC breakfast news!
I have to turn the tv off.. because... he ...gets... on... my.. nerves..
rant over. |

Most of the news and business items on Breakfast seem to be soundbites nowadays. It's as though they're deliberately dropping down to Get Me The Valium's level in order to compete for ratings.
Also, what was the point of having the poor weather woman standing outside in the dark and gales in Portsmouth at 0615 this morning? If she'd been in the studio we could have heard what she was saying more clearly, and wouldn't have kept getting distracted by her having to push her hair away from her mouth every five seconds.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I'm a big fan of Rick Stein, he influenced me to try fish, which I hated as a kid and now really enjoy, and his outlook on British food and indeed foreign food has meant I've never bought / used a microwave.
I saw this news on his website and not surprised it was on the BBC News web page. If you're a Rick Stein fan and watch his shows filmed in the UK, Chalkey was a part of the shows and an amusing lovely dog he was too.
This story, I guess, would be described as a 'Human Interest' story and whilst not appeal to the majority, will to the minority. Look at news reports on James 'Scotty' Doohan's ashes being blasted into space - probably only of interest to Star Trek fans.
I don't think this is dumbing down the news as these items have always been a part of the news, remember Nationwide - full of this stuff.
I do agree that as a nation we are dumbing down language and this is just wrong, wrong, wrong - our language is going to dissapear to be replaced by text talk. We should raise the levelof our language, make kids look up new words - not just swear to fill a sentence because they don't know how to express what they're saying.
Ok, off me soapbox! _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

I take your point about Rick's dog, and I can see that given Chalky appeared in all of Rick's programs people would be interested in the story.
I enjoy his programs and having recently lost a pet myself I know how he will be feeling now and I symathise with him.
I still see no reason for that program to be on the news though, it got relegated to second place on the BBC today which is still too high, oh well *sigh* |

My condolences Toggy - I'm assuming it was the lovely cat on your Avatar - got a ginger mog myself (Ziggy), he prefers to listen to Sarah kennedy - I'm having words with him.... _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Rick Stein's dead dog got a mention on this morning's R2 news at 1000 - KB made reference to it after the bulletin. Apparently some MP has tabled a motion declaring his sympathy for Chalkie's passing.... nice to see his constituents are getting value for money, then.

His dog got a mention on the obituary programme hosted by Matthew Bannister on Radio 4 last night also. Apparently his passing at aged 17 was equivalent to 117 years in a humans life span. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

It's still not really major news, though, is it? Fair enough to put it on page 13 of the paper, but do we really have to have it on the R2 bulletin which isn't exactly lengthy?
Or is this setting a precedent for reporting on the demise of celeb's pets? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

That is taking it a bit too far really isn't it? I wouldn't be happy if it was my MP. |
