|
|
The Pope is making a state visit to the Uk in September at a cost around £12 Million up £4 Million. This dosn't include the cost of policing his visit, and that would make the cost in the region of £24 Million. All Catholics around the world have been asked to contribute £1 each towards his visit. The UK is having to find most of it from Tax Payers. I think the Vatican should pay for all of this.

So, on that basis, the British government should foot the bill for all the security costs surrounding the Queen's visit to Canada and the USA, Mark? |

It's outrageous! what a waste of money and I don't care who he is.
If this kind of religion can live happily alongside spending of that kind whilst people starve around the world then they should be ashamed of the whole set up..
Can't he just fly over on Ryan Air and have a cup of tea? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I thought that this country was short of money and the government wanted to make savings. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I'm a Christian but not a Catholic and am dead against the UK paying such a sum for this visit when we're faced with swingeing cuts in essential services.

I read somewhere the actual cost was £8 Million but went up to £12 Million. I don't know if the Government have money set aside for state visits? It's still a hell of a lot of money for one man and some of his cardinals. |

A website's Google page rank is improved as it gets more inbound links from "compatible" web sources, and Mark helps the tabloid newspapers by posting links to their stories as part of what's called "Search Engine Optimisation". It's a pretty decent way to earn a living, I reckon. Eh Mark? |

Just wonder why couldn't those taking Holy Communion from the Pope couldn't do it in there own Church?
Interesting the pope mobile which will never do it's top speed of 160 MPH. I think there are 3 of them? Will this model ever be used again?

If the British taxpayer has to shell out for the visit of a man who still has paedophiles within his church I think the BBC might as well start playing Gary Glitter records again
Why should we have to pay over 12 million pounds at a time when jobs are being lost and there are pending benefit cuts
To me I don't want either the Pope or Mr Glitter here but at least with Gary Glitter it didn't cost us more than 12 million pounds for him to come here
Talk about double standards
By the way this message got removed from the BBC Messageboard so two fingers to you Peta!! |

Here in the Midlands we have been bombarded on BBC news with items on the pope....as he will be coming to a park in Birmingham.
No expence has been spared in carving him a chair to sit on. And to crown it all they have made him a new cross. Remember the Staffordshire hoard?... Well, there was a very crumpled cross in that find. It has now been enhanced digitally so that a pattern could be taken and a new one has been made to exact measurements complete with jewels. This is going to be presented to the pope on Sunday.. Considering the number of people who visited the exhibition, it would have been better to offer it to the country after all it is British history
For me he has not condemned loudly enough the paedophiles with in his church. He is guilty as many other bishops of 'moving on' guilty priests. When I see him kissing and touching children my stomach churns and I want to be sick. The long row of pictures of abused children make me weep.
He is the top man in that faith and the buck should stop with him. Just why is he not doing any thing about it...what more is he hiding? _________________ I like hedgehog crisps |

Too right Hedgehog! That's outrageous. Why in hell are they giving it to him - it will just go on the mantelpiece at the Vatican along with all the other priceless jewels? If he's got anything about him he'd gift it straight back to the museum. |

Agreed. It's not like the catholic church doesn't have enough gold already (even though millions of its followers live in abject poverty). |

I realise a lot of money was spent on security, but it's worth it to keep our children safe! |

One thing I read about this visit that amazed me was there was a cost of £25 to attend the open air mass in Birmingham.....when did people start paying to attend mass, apart from the discretionary offering in the collection plate?.. |

When I was a child, in Holland, poor people had to pay 1 (Dutch) cent to sit and kneel on a very uncomfortable little chair, covered in thick straw, which made you come out of church with thick ridges in your knees.
For 10 cents you had a more comfortable chair and the really well-to-do had their own pews, lovely polished wood with red velvet upholstery, which they rented for the year. |

Yes, Becky, it was a Catholic church, one of about 20 in our town at the time, they were all much the same. Strange really, nobody ever questioned it. |

As much as it's a disgrace to charge people,Fly, it's equally disgraceful, to me, to segregate people by their wealth in a house of god ....wonder where the church would have sat the man they worship, had he popped in?....he wasn't a wealthy man, was he?
