| I think he attracts more of the female listners. You ok darling - love. This is why he talks more to the females than males during the pick of pops feature. I think he does struggle through the show a little and sounds very scripted. Overall a good listener, but if he was a no body I think people would switch off. |

Really? I hadn't noticed.

I think the music has been excellent with Dale this week, so much more variety than you ever get from SW.
I like Steve as a presenter but he keeps playing the same few chart records every day for months.
He must have been playing Parachute by Cheryl Cole for about 3 months |

I have to say how much I've enjoyed Dale covering for Steve.. I think he's been very entertaining and dare I say, pleasant to listen to.
I heard most of the show whilst driving back from London yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed his manner and interaction with his callers.
I'd say it's a pity he's not offered a regular daytime programme.. breakfast for instance.

I've enjoyed it to SanteFe! Must admit I've always enjoyed him when he's done the show. The music has been really good as well.
I was in the car yesterday when he said they didn't have any callers with the right year for the memories. I'd not heard the previous clues and he then gave it as being the year the space hopper came out and those dreadful clackers! I thought it was 71 immediately but no hands free so couldn't call up.

PS if you haven't listened to Pick of the Pops today, try and listen again as I thought it was a cracker. 64 and 70 both brilliant charts!

One of the phone-ins yesterday said he wished that Dale was on this slot every day! Dale sounded well chuffed. I think he seems like a really likeable guy and I've enjoyed this weeks programme.

Quite right, Ron. Dale was immensely popular with the listeners on Radio Trent, and had a deserved reputation for being a pleasant and approachable man off-air; my late mother was a huge fan. He was a regular diner at our village pub, where mum worked in the evenings, and they had a good rapport. |

I'd go as far as to say that when Dale fronts a daytime show I look forward to it; anyone who remembers him from his Radio Trent days will confirm that he was (and still is ) very good at his trade. |

R2 seems to get worse every week, now with Aled Jones, Chris Evans or Graham Norton on breakfast, JV, SW or Dale Winton and Simon Mayo the only time to switch on is for Ken Bruce, unless it's Zoe Ball !, and then after 7pm  |

I think the problem is Radio 2 itself. Apart from a few gems that are aimed at people who can actually think for themselves (regarded by R2 management as a minority audience, it would seem) most of the programming content and style is so unbelievably old-fashioned, down-market and appalling! |

It is probable that none of my suggestions would count as 'celebs' or 'alternative' stand-up comedians, so probably wouldn't even be considered as Radio 2 or 6 music presenters these days. Especially having been chopped down by Douglas' hatchet. In my opinion the following didn't deserve to lose their shows: Sybil Ruscoe, Lynn Parsons, Mark Goodier, Ed Stewart.

I have to confess that the only ones on your list who REALLY make me reach instantly for the off button are Steve Wright and Zoe Ball; Vine can be incredibly irritating when he goes into "red-top" mode but I usually just filter out the really banal topics.
I've found Mayo, Norton and Winton to be perfectly acceptable, and whilst the latter two could be dismissed as "TV celebrities" there is no doubt that they've done their time on radio and are perfectly capable of hosting a prime-time slot.
I do find Aled Jones a little on the bland side but again I'll listen if there's no alternative; and if Evans junked those stupid "megaphone call" and "hello-goodbye" slots I might even lean towards liking the show rather than merely tolerating it. The variety of music has improved dramatically since Wogan's tenure; although in his day it was never the same after Paul Walters' untimely demise.
Slightly off-topic, but one of my pet hobby-horses; a refreshing feature of Chris Evans' take-over has been the almost total lack of plugs for CIN. Worthy though it might be, Wogan milked it to death.
One thing I'll agree with you on though; Ken is head and shoulders above the rest. Mind you, Lynn Bowles would disagree with that! |

I really enjoyed Dale on the Big Show and wish he had a permanent show on Radio 2 other than POTPs but I'm looking forward to Steve's return...

I'd love to know what the logistical arrangements are for getting Dale to present POTPs, given that he lives for most of the year in Florida. Obviously, his doing this stint on weekday afternoons requires him to reside in London for the duration, but I'm wondering if he bulk-voice-tracks all the links for a great big wad of POTPs in "normal" times in order that producer and editor then assemble the programmes in post production?
Of course, in theory, he doesn't have to be seated behind a mic in a London studio to simply lay voice links down - he could do those in Florida over the line. |
