Is anyone else looking forward to the Chris Evans Breakfast Show in a field? It’s this Friday coming. How bonkers is it to do an OB on the Friday of a Bank Holiday Weekend, and not just any Bank Holiday Weekend but the last one before Christmas.

Back in June when the sun was blisteringly hot – Richard Madeley did a fantastic job of selling Cornwall- one of the best bits of Radio I’ve heard in a while. The Spanish Armada, indeed. Oh how we laughed. You know, that was quite a while ago and you can say the same thing about pretty much anywhere along the South Coast.

The thing with Cornwall and anyone who really knows Cornwall is this- when the sun shines there is no better place- that’s not disputed, but at other times, it’s like living in a cloud. Cloud-base Zero is Cornwall’s second name. You look at the stats – Cornwall has lots more sun than other places- on average is warmer than other places (also wetter but pop that to one side for a moment- don’t look at the bad stats)

Here’s the deal though, Cornwall has more sun than other places because it’s further south than other places, which means the days are slightly longer, and also most of the extra sun is during January/February and October/November which although still quite cold makes the average temperature much higher too. August in Cornwall is typically quite (very) wet (it doesn’t have the, much wetter than other places stats, for nothing and don’t forget-if it’s not raining Jan/Feb and Oct/Nov then it must be raining sometime).

The main thing though, and I can hear Jonny saying, “I told you so”, is when it rains in Cornwall, unless you can make up a game that involves catching lots of rainwater, there’s nothing else to do- it’s all outside you see: Cornwall, is outdoors, and it’s not outdoors like being in your garden or in Regent’s Park, it’s outdoors and like three days by Camel away from being anywhere warm and dry.

So if we all cross our fingers and hope for sun then maybe we’ll get a nice dry show.

A Motor-home has been drafted in, and quite right too, what they really need is one of those formula one type, portable corporate empires.

The weather forecast is getting better for Friday - it's gone from 0.3mm of rain between 07:00 and 09:30 yesterday to 0.0mm of rain today or in laymans terms, dry.

So you see, all that hope is doing some good, and since it's probably just me on here doing the hoping, that makes me feel quite powerful. Smile

I'll be parting the seas next...

This link (if it works) is to a rotating set of live web-cam images from the Scilly Isles.... the trick is, the weather there now is what it will be like in Talland Bay in about 12-24 hrs time.. depending on how quickly the weather is moving....we use these to decide whether(pardon the pun) or not to go to Cornwall. Cos if it's gonna be sunny- the three hour drive is well worth it... our friends there say to us... how come you always arrive just as the sun comes out.... I usually say .. woooooooo black magic, but it's not really....

The other thing is, it's better to go by helicopter... it's like being in an episode of "Coast"... and with Chris having to be back for the One Show is probably a good idea too....

I nearly said that yesterday, Rach. From that long-range forecast on Monday (sunny periods, 16C, very light wind from the west) I thought it might be foggy. However, it has changed (sunny, 12C, northerly wind) so he'll probably be able to make his getaway. Moira might need an extra blanket in the horsebox, though. Smile

Even on days when it's sunny all over Cornwall generally - you can get a patch of murky rain that just sits there in the very bit where you are. It's a funny place in that regard.

Thinking about it, I cannot remember why they decided to have a show in a field, I can remember how they decided which field- the contest between Jonny and Richard but not why.... was it because it was in the middle of festival season? It may have been Chris trying to catch that festival vibe thing by having a show in a field... it was a good idea but good ideas have to be spontaneous- do it now! Not do it in a few months time...

....we had something similar with a Christmas Party where I used to work. At our Christmas Party Meeting in June, it was a brilliant idea to hire a Barge on some waterway in Somerset somewhere for our Christmas Party... oh how we dreamed of chugging through the reeds, sipping on glasses of wine while we wached the sun setting, to the sound of Noddy Holder... the reality... we arrived in the pitch dark, in the middle of nowhere, in my little black dress and nothing else....it was freezing!!!... It was raining !!! it was windy!!!! ...it was a pitch black moonless night- we could see nothing, the Barge smelled of, well, Barge... the food was bussed in, so was quite cold, the music was good though.... but the party was supposed to be out on the "Sun Deck" where it was quite spacious....but we all had to cram inside- so it was quite cosy - I ruined my little black dress getting intimate with the engine- just to keep some feeling in my limbs........

In the words of ...Roy Scheider....... you're gonna need a bigger horse-box...

Yes, I'm afraid we have had Cornish drizzle here all day, too. Memories of holiday fortnights in East Cornwall.......

My mates and I used to go camping at Talland Bay, just below where Richard & Judy now have their holiday home. No sign of Chris Evans then, thank god!!!

To be honest I've had enough of this crap now....

How many more things do they have to get Chris Evans to do to increase his popularity? I don't recall in recent history any daytime presenter having to perform all these extra curricular events.

We get the message BBC. Some of us love Chris and some of us don't. No amount of forcing him into the limelight with all this exposure is going to convert those of us who don't like him and in fact the more often you publicise it or play a trailer the more likely we are to to turn off.

I don't recall The One Show getting as much promotion on R2 when AG and CB were hosting. The only reason it is getting trailed now is nothing to do with Jason and Alex but the fact that they need to justify Chris's alleged £12k per show - a disgraceful waste of money IMO.

The BBC are getting their money via the licence fee so why does it matter whether any one listens or watches?

The other day when he was having his first outing on The One Show, he got his followers texting, emailing etc to help him decide which outfit he was going to wear!

And then he wore something completely different as he'd probably planned to do all along. Just another attempt to get the mindless morons 'interacting' with him. It's the relentless insulting of my intelligence that gets me going.

Well, actually, as these OBs go, I thought it was pretty good - you had to watch it on the web, though.

I don't fancy that Cornish Pasty's chances much on the journey up to London.

Brilliant!

I thought it was all a bit limp really- I’m not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t that:

the crowd looked miserable and cold to me,( I expect they were) Judy looked like she wanted to be somewhere else( I expect she did), Chris E was working really hard to look like he was enjoying it, ( I expect he wasn’t), the campers were penned in like sheep and the Scouting for Girls drummer forgot his drum-kit- what was going on there? I hope he wasn’t taking a third of the fee.

Still, it's given the lovely Talland Bay its "15-minutes of fame", so to speak, even if the beach lacks sand!

The weather held off with the excitement surronding the cornish town. People enjoyed standing behind a rope watching Chris and his team presenting a radio show in a field. Richard and Judy were excited to be center of attention. Moria was in an old scruffy horse box with every newsread the doors were opened to reveal she was really there. The farmer who owned the field said" they are more than welcome back next year. Very low budget broadcast. Next year is a long way off so we will wait and see if it happens again.

Luckily, I didn't hear any of it. After an initial period of weakness, I too have joined the "turn him off" club... the whole show really does make me cringe, including Johnny what's his name and even more so, Moira Stewart! Hi ya Babe! yuk...

I don't see there's anything clever about these outside broadcasts at all and the possibilities are endless! the local scrapyard, corner shop, builders merchants etc.. I think it's boring and just another waste of money. Probably a good day out for the gang though! Rolling Eyes
