The Manic Street Preachers did a superb live cover version of All or Nothing on the Simon Mayo Drivetime show a couple of weeks ago
I have always thought the Small Faces never got the recognition they deserved back in the 60s
My own favourite track is 'In my Minds Eye' |

Ruddlescat: I'm not sure it's true to say that they didn't get the recognition they deserved. They had a string of hit singles, and their classic album Ogden's Nut Gone Flake reached no 1 and got rave reviews in 1968 and still is critically acclaimed.
Favourite song: Tin Soldier, blue eyed soul at its best. |

Schiz I suppose that every artist in the 60s was to some extent in the shadow of the Beatles which I personally thought was a shame in many ways
The album you mention is certainly critically acclaimed today and it has been for many years but I'm not sure it was to the same extent when first released even though as you say it was very successful
I suppose album tracks were rarely played on daytime shows on mainstream radio stations in those days so people had to go out and search out great albums much more than is the case today
I agree Tin Soldier is an excellent track but there again I can't really recall any bad ones. |

Have I ever mentioned here or elsewhere  that I got me oldies played on Steve Wright when Richard the wondrous Allinson was depping for the week?
No? There's a surprise.
Anyways, one of the tracks I got played when I got me oldies played on Steve Wright when Richard Allinson was depping was All or Nothing by the Small Faces.
And Schiz - Tin Soldier was/is nothing short of a masterpiece!
(I hate to say it but I am missing the thumbs up smiley off the Radio 2 board). |

Actually my description of Tin Soldier as 'blue eyed soul' is probably a bit silly because (I think) P P Arnold did background vocals!
(Why oh why don't Radio 2 and other stations play gems such as All Or Nothing and Tin Soldier instead of all that rubbish by Queen, ELO, Abba etc?) |

| Ogdens' Nut Gone was a brilliant album. I especially like 'Afterglow of your love' which I think is better than many of their single hits. My wife was always tickled pink when the LP came to Rene (the docker's delight) which is one of the cheekiest songs ever. The one and a half minute outro of Rene would be perfect for a Sally Traffic voice over. |

Ogdens was indeed a great album.
Coincidentally I've just heard 'Afterglow Of Your Love' on Planet Rock on Nicky Horne's superb Chains programme. A wonderful show with great music and facts, even if some of the links are a bit tenuous. |

I like Nicky's show, too. You're right about some of the links but, let's be honest, it must take some researching so they can be forgiven.
It's the sort of show that Richard Allinson could do well on Radio 2 - if only the station's management had a modicum of imagination. |

Colin, I agree, the research and the knowledge behind the show is impressive.
As you say, RA or R and M are ready made for this kind of innovative and interesting show on Radio 2, perhaps on a Friday night. If only the dullards behind Radio 2 music policy would show some initiative.
Oh well, it's back to Ken Bruce tomorrow. |
