Do they still have the original lineup
Jan Akkerman etc
I saw a couple of years ago he was giving guitar masterclasses at Birkenhead Arts Centre
Can't remember the other well known name in the band
I used to have their music on all the time whilst revising for my A Levels many years ago |
Hi ruddlescat, they are on at The Stables, Wavendon, my local venue!
There are only two of the original members now:
Thijs van Leer - Hammond-orgel, flute and vocals and Pierre van der Linden - drums
They are now joined by Niels van der Steenhoven - guitar and Bobby Jacobs - bass
Fingers crossed that they are still OK, I saw Curved Air there last year and they were excellent. |

Mine too! It's one of the best venues in the country. As for Focus, they were superb in the 70s - as was Curved Air (featuring Sonja Christina, I do recall?). I remember the "arty" translucent vinyl record. |

Moonraker many thanks for that information
I'll have a look to see if they are doing a tour and playing anywhere near Chester
The Curved Air gig sounded great I don't know if Sonia Kristina is still in the current line up

Nothing at all today.
But last night it Focus, live and brilliant. A fantastic mixture of old and new material, presented in a way that made it difficult to tell the difference. The two new members, Niels van der Steenhoven and Bobby Jacobs work extemely well with the two founder members, Thijs van Leer and Pierre van der Linden.
Trying to decide if I'm going over to Letchworth on Sunday night to see them again . . .
Re Curved Air, yes Sonia is still performing with them, well worth catching if you can, I also saw Melanie Safka last year, another artist I'd recommend if you liked her in the 70s.
Feeling a bit old today (ahhh). |

Hey Moonraker, you say that the Stables is your "local" venue. Where do you live?
I absolutely love the Stables, by the way. My son saw Toploader there last week and both he and I saw Peter Green's Splinter Group a long way back. |

Did they play Hocus Pocus and Sylvia or was it newer stuff? not sure if they are writing new material so could be a pointless question
you might like these Moonraker new but of that similar ilk

Without giving too much away . . . about halfway between Hitchin and Bedford, so The Stables is only half-hours drive away. Close enough to call local?
and I agree it's a fantastic venue, I get over there about six times a year. |

I spent most of the afternoon driving a Citroen Relay van around S.E. London and Kent drowning out the engine noise listening to "101 Pirate Radio Hits". There's no doubt, the 60's had some absolutely brilliant records. I've now a got a sore throat from all the off-key singing!! _________________ Nilbert Zilbert

Funny you should say that but a poster on the EA site recommended both of them to me and listened a bit to both I think I wasn't too bothered by Duck Deluxe but liked Brinsley Schwartz.
Also came a across a band called the Records from the pub band scene similar to say Ash or Feeder (nowdays anyway) I've been slowly getting into the punk scene especially the NY stuff, and I think they were influenced by the pub bands from here as much as rock and roll of the 50's and the Velvets _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

Both of these used to play regularly at my college in the early/mid 70s. Brinsley Schwarz (both the man and the band) was always good value, and Ducks Deluxe were fabulous! Unfortunately they were rather short-lived. |

Small world isn't it Undi
Brinsley Schwarz were always a favourite of mine and as Colin says a terrific live band. Brinsley Schwarz and Bob Andrews went on to form The Rumour, Graham Parker's back up band. Also fantastic live.
As for Ducks Deluxe, they were short lived but Nick Garvey and Andy McMaster went on to form The Motors. Incidentally Martin Belmont, D D's drummer also joined The Rumour.
Very incestual
Question....How do I insert part of a previous post into one of mine? I only seem to be able to quote the whole post |

Dammit, I loved them too, and saw them several times. David "Kid" Jensen championed them on his Radio One show in the 70s and that's how I got into them. "Heat Treatment" was a decent-selling single which they performed superbly on stage as their encore.

Go to the post and click the "Quote" button. Copy all of the text - including the "Quote" in and out tags.
Now close it and click "Reply" to create a new post. Paste in the copied text. Now just edit out the stuff you don't want.
Use this approach to combine quotes from different posters in your new post. |

By Jove I may have got it.....Can't we have a quick quote like they do on EA? Oops I may have given myself away to Undi there
Yep GP and the Rumour were one of the greatest live acts I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. They really couldn't go wrong with such pedigree. Unfortunately I think they got swallowed up in the explosion of punk rock... |

See Doc (Sorry Arthur) all I had when I grew up was the bloody eghties where everyone took themselves way to seriously.
After hearing a few tracks from similar bands I can see why the fuss was all about Dr Feelgood, not knocking the others but the energy and and chemistry of Lee and Wilco were something else, and Roxette (not to be confused for the sh*^e Swedish band of the 80's is now right up there in my ever growing top 10 (currently around 50) _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

EA uses a later version (phpBB3) of this software, which has more features and Dave, the techie, operates it from his own servers.

Definitely, as did one of my absolutely favourite bands from the period - The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver. With the brilliance of Iain and Gavin Sutherland's songwriting and brilliant musicianship from the Quiver guys (including the fabulous guitar work of Tim Renwick) they deserved much more. However, as you say, the explosion that was punk killed it all stone dead.
When I hear people saying that punk was necessary because everything else was crap in the latter half of the 70s, I say that's absolute rubbish. Sure, we needed punk to breathe fresh air into the business and that's what it did, but the best bands of the 70s weren't doing Top of The Pops and therefore got forgotten about very quickly.
As an example, SBQ's album "Beat of The Street" is fabulous - and the band sounded great when performing this stuff live simply because they recorded in the studio "as live" most of the time. |

I think it was needed but it's shame from my limited knowledge that bands like ones mentioned above were brushed aside for punk when they were doing the same as what punk did but with slightly less "style" and a good few years before.
I for one am thoroughly enjoying most of what you guys have recommended. Thank you

Albums that are recorded "live" always sound better imo and at least there's no disapointing difference when you see the bands live. Which is as important to me as the album.

Yes, I have a very big Top 10 as well!
By the way, if you have only one Dr. Feelgood album in your collection, make sure it's "Stupidity". This is the live album that captures the energy and sheer madness of the band perfectly. You must turn up the volume otherwise it just doesn't sound right.

Sometime in mid to late 1976 there was a ground zero moment for the burgeoning punk movement when the majority of what went before became irrelevant. The birth of the Boring Old Fart! Musical blinkers were put on by many and I’ll freely admit that I was one of these fools. I wore the blinkers for many years and dismissed whole musical genres as sh*te.
It took me a long while to realise there are only two musical genres. Music that I like and music that I don’t. That’s not to say the music I dislike is sh*te, it’s just that it’s not my cup of tea....at the moment, though it may be next week. Musical taste shouldn’t be set in stone...
Anyway as this thread is a “what I’m listening to” thread I’ll post this YT of Brinsley Schwarz from OGWT that I’m listening to as I type. It features Whispering Bob name checking the bands I mentioned to Undi........erm......elsewhere.....

It's my mantra.... I remember buying David Bowie's wonderful LP "Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars" after seeing him play at Plymouth Guildhall and reading the back cover to be told "To be played at maximum volume". So I thought "Fair enough". And I did. And I have done ever since. |

Going back to the various references to Ducks Deluxe earlier in this thread do any of you experts on this band happen to know the name of their former lead guitarist
Was it a guy called Laurence (Lol) Parry by any chance
I mention it only because I had some business dealings with a person of this name a few years ago and I'm almost certain he said he had been a guitarist in Ducks Deluxe
Any information would be appreciated _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Hi Ruddles
I only know DD from the early years, 1972 till they split in '76 I think, and don't recall any one of that name in the band. I think Nick Garvey and Martin Belmont were the guitarists, I may be wrong it's been a while They reformed in the mid 00's but don't know any band members I'm afraid....
However there's a guy named Laurence Parry who plays horns in UB40's live band. Couldn't be him could it |

No the Laurence Parry I'm talking about was definitely a guitarist and had a wife called Jayne who was a photographer and artist
When I met him back in 1993 he was living in Shrewsbury and was a member of Shrewsbury Music Club _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I have a Ducks Deluxe album (on ye olde vinyl), but it's stored away in archive boxes (along with many hundreds of others). I'm prompted to dig it out.
My nearest and dearest is going to ask: "Why are you getting them out? What's wrong with CDs?".
She might also ask "Who the hell is this lot?".

I listen to the Flaming Lips album on a regular basis, and some of the tracks do get played on R2, Do you realise and Are you a Hypnotist were playlisted.
