There was a 10% increase in the number of drivers breathalysed in London over the Christmas and new year period, police figures have shown.
But there was only an increase of 0.63% in the number of people found to be drink-driving, the Metropolitan Police (the Met) said.

You could blame the 24 hour drinking for the increase? |

Drink drivers seem to be the hard-core offenders nowadays plus the odd few who either still forget or think they'll get away with it. The culture has changed with designated drivers, taxis or stay-overs meaning that it's not as prevalent as it used to be. Isn't drug-driving on the increase?
Mind you, given some of the idiots I see on the roads, you don't always need a drink to be a potential killer. Since the speed cameras went up on the A68 (Newcastle)-Carter Bar-Edinburgh road a few years ago, I've had people heading towards me overtaking around corners, towards blind summits, over double white lines and along brief straight stretches that are far too short for safe overtaking unless you've got strap-on rockets fitted, all because virtually all of the long straights have cameras on them. The Gatsos don't catch this sort of behaviour, do they? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

is that the road over the pennines - I hate that one - it's one lane: you inevitable ALWAYS get stuck behind a farm vehicle or something else going as equally slow and then when you do get the 2 lane stretches the little devils speed up! so you can't overtake - swear they do it on purpose _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |

Yes, Julia - the road south from Edinburgh, through Dalkeith, Lauder and Jedburgh towards Newcastle.... 21 speed cameras (yes, I'm sad enough to have counted them once) in 50 miles. The one hidden at the north end of Lauder is the best one, it catches people slowing down into the 30 zone from the north - a real money-making machine. There are some real accident black spots on the A68, but funny how there are no cameras at any of these places....
It seems human nature to speed up as soon as someone tries to overtake you - I usually get behind someone that does about 20mph around bends that would defy the trades description act, then they stand on the accelerator the minute they see me pulling out behind them....
My pet peeve though is the one where I'm fourth or fifth back in a line, I can see the road's clear and nip out, only to get past three then the last but one in the queue decides to pull out infront of me without looking in his/her mirror first! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

No - you could blame people who drink and drive. What a silly post Mark!
