After the M1 closure between J4 - J1 Southbound & J2 & J4 Northbound on Friday due to a fire in a scrap yard under a bridge adjacent to the carriageway are going to be reviewed to what should be put under bridges says 'Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond. We have exactly the same problem in Central Milton Keynes. Back in January 2010 there was a fire under a main connecting bridge in Central Milton Keynes that effectively divides the MK shopping centre in half at first floor level. It was caused by a fire in the open-air market that runs partly underneath it and caused structural damage for which the repair estimates were almost £500,000.
See here for pics and story: http://goo.gl/Shms4
It transpires that it's costing us over £100,000 permonth to keep it closed "pending a review" as to whether the bridge should be demolished and that part of the complex re-developed. Even before the fire it was a contentious issue with many people opposing the council's proposals.
It's a coincidence that they're now using this as an excuse to push their "review" forwards. Apparently, the LibDem led council has now been advised that it is illegal to keep the road closed as it's a classified road.
However, one has to ask what numpty thought it a good idea to store highly inflamable materials under the structure in the first place....! |

The health and safety executive will now have to establish who's to blame for this. Either the garages or scrap yard who were storing explosive material have followed the right guidelines then the insurance company may pay out. It could be thousands, or even millions to pay for a new bridge. It gives Phillip Hammonds Transport Office something else to do.. |

The temporary pinning of the bridge makes me wonder if the M1 will need to be shut once again to completely replace it. Obviously this will be done at night, but at a cost. There are also houses near the scrap yard. Blimey who would want to live right under a bloody Motorway. |

Was half listening to a discussion on this on JV's show. Some one said, "knock it flat and rebuild it! Japan did a whole stretch of road!" to which the guest replied "it wasn't an elevated section!"
What a ridiculous man! _________________ Flickr |

The houses are under the motorway? What about the scrapyard? It's crazy putting houses near a scrapyard under the motorway. Whatever next? |

Mark,
Houses are not UNDER the M1, but a lot... a helluva lot... are withing 50 meters of motorways all around the country. You see Mark, many houses were there before the motorway.
(and many houses were built after, very close).
Cleary folks want (or chose) to live under such circumstances, I suppose the houses are cheaper than those 5 miles away.
Must be noisy being 50m from a motorway. We are 1 mile from a motorway and closer than that to a dual carraigeway and, well, sitting in our back garden is never a silent experience.
Sitting on the bog here is never a silent experience because we always leave the top window slightly open and we can hear the motorway in the toilet, a constant swishhhhhh noise. _________________ -
