I was just thinking that myself!
We have a holiday caravan on the north west Norfilk coast and that's expecting a storm surge tide this evening. Thankfully it's on higher ground but I see this morning that the mechanised storm barriers are being moved into place at Wells-next-the-Sea just along the coast. |

| On BBC East news they're doing a live OB from the old town of Kings Lynn which is under threat of flooding - despite storm barriers being installed. I hope not - there's a great Italian restaurant down in the old harbour district! |

It's been a bit of a wild & windy day in Cambridgeshire, think we have escaped the worst of it though.
Not looking good for folk on the Norfolk/Suffolk coast. |

Well, if we get flooded on the cliffs, I dread to think what would happen to most of Norfolk.. 
Yes, I just glance out of my second floor window at the harbour and the sea looks very high. I'm just about to venture out to have a look.. there's lots of people out there and some emergency vehicles too.. I'll report back.

Well, the beach - about 100 feet of it, is under deep water and the large model yacht pond is now part of the sea!
The waves are breaking on the promenade wall and just coming over it so I'd imagine there will be many flooded houses along the river frontage. There's a pub/hotel on the harbour and I know from our plumber earlier this afternoon they were desperately trying to source a few pumps for their basement and looking at it, I don't envy their position right now.
There's two river bridges linking Gt.Yarmouth and Gorleston and they are both closed so some of our staff are having to sleep at ours overnight....

Yes Helen to me it's rather silly - it's not any great shock that someone of Mandela's age dies sad though it may be but it just proves the point that human existence is short lived and transitory but the weather is with us for ever

Yes and they've been telling you to watch and listen to your local channel, then they go and cancel.  . There is a news channel at the end of the day.
I wonder what would have happened if it had been Christmas Day???

Yes I agree on both counts. At one stage, BBC1, BBC2, BBC News Channel, BBC Radio 4 and 5Live were all given over to "news" coverage of the great man's sad passing.
And then, switch on Radio 4 at breakfast time this morning and what do we have...................?
And then I switch on BBC Breakfast TV, and what do we have............? (And the title strap read "BREAKING NEWS....... Nelson Mandela has died" almost 12 hours after the event).
I despair. |

The sad news re Mandela also gave the BBC the opportunity to not show the scenes from the House of Commons where Ed Balls made a complete berk of himself - we all remember "a good day to bury bad news."

Helen, i'm assuming you weren't aware, but Question Time went out on BBC2 at approx 11.30, after which the schedule was cleared to enable the BBC to continue with pointless studio discussion with people who don't matter!
Obviously no reference to Mandela because it's usually recorded at approx 7.30pm on the evening of transmission. |

No I didn't know, Colin, I'd gone to bed by that time, but had read a tweet from D Dimbleby saying he had no idea when and if it would be aired.
I didn't expect a Mandela comment as I know it's pre recorded but thought it would be interesting to hear comments about Ed Balls in the Commons.

Yes, indeed we do ...Iain Duncan Smith played a blinder on that day...
The work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, has used the cover of the autumn statement to announce that he is to miss his deadline of getting all existing and new benefit claimants on to universal credit (UC) by 2017.
He has also confirmed he is having to entirely rework the IT system at substantial cost because the original IT failed to meet the needs of claimants.
In a political humiliation for Duncan Smith, the minister has had to admit that at least 700,000 claimants will not be on UC by the end of 2017.
The reforms have been billed as one of the biggest changes to the welfare state since its inception, but have been bedevilled by repeated IT failures and delays, as well as a reluctance by ministers to admit the postponements.
Given the failure by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to meet previous deadlines, this new timetable is bound to be viewed with scepticism.
The scale of the setback suggests a new government may have to take a cool look at whether the scheme should go ahead. There has been a bitter blame game within the department and across Whitehall.
