No problems other than pop up adverts appearing - three in a row recently... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Problems? You mean slow to appear or you don't like them? There is another thread recently about these.
I was only able to see them when I had my PC and stuff upgraded recently. Some of them are soft porn, not that I mind that, really, but my family do look over my shoulder occasionally as they walk through this (dining) room |

I've got to admit that I find them annoying. I've had them come on without knowingly clicking on them.
Why did they just suddenly start to appear??

Yes. I've had annoying pop-up windows appearing when I select r2ok from my bookmarks. It's only happened in the last week or two. Can this not be stopped? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Other than paying for no adverts, there are ways to block them. Before I had my PC serviced last month the settings I had DID block all the ads, pop-ups and even the banner at r2ok but I can't remember what settings or software I was using to block them all.
My PC used to block annoying video ads on yahoo too, but I've got them back as well. I remember having at least 3 toolboxes displayed in this page header, but now I've only got Yahoo, so I will explore toolboxes again. |

I just noticed my pop up blocker was "off" so maybe thats the problem in my case.
I went to "View" clicked "Toolbars" and turned on "Yahoo Toolbar"
That gives me a pop up blocker icon on the bar to switch on or off... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I've done nothing and don't use any fancy toolbars and I've just had another one come up. All I did was click on the email link that a reply had come in to a post...........
Damned annoying to say the least and not user friendly either............
If you need ads to pay for the site why not use Google ads? They were on Jezzas and you didn't get any pop up problems.

when i first use the site all manner of web addresses appear at the bottom of the screen, and it says its installing some windows program, I have to click cancel, then I get sent to other advert websites, exiting and re-entering seems to stop it. I am also not impresed with the smutty adverts. |

Hi John.
I also have one of these forums elsewhere on the internet (completely unrelated to this site) and the ads appeared on mine recently.
I found them annoying and although none of my members voiced any objections I decided to pay to have them removed. It's a one off fee of $10 which I guess is around £6 which is peanuts when you consider that you have a free forum providing an unlimited database. My forum has half the members of this one and about 45000 less posts but it has only been running about six months. So thats just the two of us and there are literally thousands of us doing this worldwide. All for free
I'd have a word with Admin. Tell him to get his Paypal account out! |

Just got another one....... they are a damned nuisance.
I wouldn't have thought $10 was too much to pay. Do we need to pass the hat round for contributions?
I'll not be posting or reading much if they continue.

H,
I'm not sure but maybe each member viewing pages might have to pay the $10, and a little bit of code or whatever is saved on your PC to block the ads.
Of course when you update IE or whatever you'll be back to the ads again.... I'm not sure, but I can't believe ONE $10 will remove the ads from all our screens
There's bound to be a trick in there somewhere. The same ads appear on another little-used MB on my own website and that's a Network54 forum.

Trust me John, it's a one off payment of $10 that removes the ads from the forum database, therefore removing from view whichever PC you log on from.
In theory, anyone could pay to have the ads removed as when you click the link it only asks you for the forum URL, not for admin passwords or anything like that.
It seems a shame to have bothered to design your own banner and upload it and then have something completely irrelevant to the forum constantly sitting there and annoying you - a bit like Scott really!
I would say that there's enough objection on here for someone to stick their hand in their pocket to get the ads removed. As I said, everything else you have here is for free so what's a measly six quid? |

It's the full screen pop-unders that annoy me, but they can be easily extinguished once and for all. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Helen - I use an Apple Mac running OSX. It's easily done in preferences. Quite how you do it in Windoze I can't recall, but it's still pretty easy if you use Firefox. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. I still use IE Robbie.
The thing is why should we have to do anything when all it needs is for Admin to pay $10? It's not exactly going to break the bank is it? Where is he anyway?
At least with Google ads we didn't get this problem on Jezzas.

But jezzas was hosted privately, wasn't it? That's the thing about these freebie forums - the ads pay for the hosting and generte a modicum of profit and so they will introduce them wherever they can, especially if the advertisers are paying on a "pay per impression" basis. Google ads are different because if you own the site and pay the hosting, the revenue from Google Adsense is your own. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Well if what Angus McCoatup says is correct and Admin can't afford it, I'm sure between us we could manage to raise approx £6?
Yes Jezzas was privately hosted.

Is the 6 quid a one-off payment - or monthly? Seems mad not to make use of the opportunity to me. Mind you, it would be much better to derive income from ads directly. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. The way I read Angus' post above makes it look like a one off.

Helen <slight diversion here>
What are the plans for jezzas - if any? It seems a shame that it's just "died". _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Yes guys, just to confirm, you pay your $10 just once and the ads gets removed from the forum database, never to be seen by anyone again. All it needs is a Paypal account and the ads will disappear within a few hours (depending on what time of day you make the request)
I removed the ads from my forum because they were pi$$ing me off although I never had any complaints from my members. I think there has been enough disquiet here now for someone to start paying up.......Admin? are you reading this? |
