I noticed that comment too Becky and wondered, even though I'd not read the report that you quoted.

Interestingly, my sister-in-law is a livelong Cliff fan and we were talking about this on a family visit to Devon last weekend. She said exactly that - that Cliff records aren't heard as often on radio since the raid.

What an apparent stitch-up it all is.

I think it probably is to do with the raid, and correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Tony Blackburn fired from a commercial radio station for playing Cliff records a few years ago??? I remember JV making a comment as it must have been on the news and then playing a cliff track and saying 'I'm still here' or something like that.

No, that was a PR stunt for the station he was working for at the time.

Listening to POTP yesterday I wondered what became of Ashton,Gardner and Dyke (Resurrection Shuffle)
Looking them up I found they were one hit wonders and were from my neck of the woods. Very Happy
Before their break-up in 1968, they backed George Harrison on his album Wonderwall Music.

There were a few on the '69 chart that i didn't remember at all. Confused

They broke up much later than 1968 - I remember seeing Ashton Gardner & Dyke appearing on TOTP back when Resurrection Shuffle was moving up the chart. It was a Thursday (therefore the show was recorded the night before) and on the Friday I went to see Deep Purple live - and Ashton Gardner & Dyke played support! Deep Purple were debuting their latest single (even though they weren't a singles band really) which was Strange Kind of Woman, and that must have been late 1971 or early 1972. I was in sixth form in Plymouth at the time!!

A,G&D were a rather odd support act to Purple (lots of brass in the backline) but really good. I think that it was Jon Lord who took them under his wing and helped them to get on the tour, and later they worked on one of the Lord's solo projects. Sadly, they pretty much disappeared off the radar not long after and I often wondered what happened to their members.

Ooops, I've just edited my post. Never mind.

Yes, I now see that they formed in 1968.

A,G and D's Resurrection Shuffle was a hit in February 1971.

And A Strange Kind Of Woman (my favourite Deep Purple song) was from April 1971.

"Deep Purple In Rock" was one of those must-have albums for male sixth-formers at the time! Smile

Yes I bought it mainly for the reason you say Colin - didn't really like it all that much at the time but years later I realised just how good it was

Normally people tell me that I'm ahead of my time but sadly not on that occasion Smile

Deep Purple In Rock is indeed a fine album. I bought it when it came out in 1970. Speed King, Flight Of The Rat, Child in Time and four other great tracks.

I don't usually stay with Tony for the full 2 hours of his programme but for whatever reason did for his programme from Saturday last...there were some nice easy listening tracks from both decades on it which suited my mood at the time.

I could listen to SOT60s, SOT70s and POTP all the time, no problem, but really couldn't stand non stop Norton and O'Grady so not so sure it's a good idea.

He will indeed!

A great chart from 1963 today, the year I think I first got into pop music. A little bit later in the year though, around the time of From Me To You I think.

H

PS Maybe it was a bit early as I loved Summer Holiday.......... well I was only 11.

I've never been too keen on pre 1964 music, but today's 1963 was very good. Island Of Dreams, End Of The World, Rythym Of The Rain, From A Jack To A King, all great songs. And that new group from Liverpool....

I agree with Schiz and Angela but as Helen says what a good chart from 1963 today - like you Helen that was the year I became interested in pop music - and I vividly remember my mum buying me three singles to play on my brand new record player one of which was 'Come On Home' BY The Springfields which I really loved - many years later I found out she got them as a reduced job lot in Boots in St Helens Shocked - does anyone else remember when Boots used to sell records Smile

I remember my aunty had Say I Won't Be There by the Springfields, and I used to hear it when we visited. I think it was originally a French folk song.

I do remember Boots selling records Ruddles! Bought several from Newcastle and can remember the big store in Manchester selling them not long after we moved down here in '83. Not sure when they stopped though.

Yes, Gerry and The Pacemakers were top of the charts this week,in '63. Wink
Joking apart I was happy to read this week that Gerry is back on the road again after pulling out of shows (one in which I was due to see him) due to illness.
I enjoyed the '63 part of the show too and the songs already mentioned plus In Dreams, Losing You, Like I've Never Been Gone and Two Kinds of Teardrops....good chart!

I liked Gerry And The Pacemakers (Ferry Across The Mersey and Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying especially). There was a time around 1963-65 when most groups seemed to come from Liverpool! The Searchers, Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas, The Merseys, The Merseybeats (were they the same band?) and that other group...

I agree that it's a great track from that era but if I recall correctly it was a cover version - at the back of my mind and without checking on line I have a feeling that the original was done by Dobie Gray Smile

You're right, ruddles,it is a cover version....the original was by Dorian Smile Gray (I only know because I looked it up)...and was a hit in 1968. Seems a bit odd,to me, to make another version of a song just a couple of years later,still....

Oops Becky - but I was close Embarassed

Your recent post on this subject reminded me that about 3 months ago I was asked to prepare and present a pop music quiz for a certain venue in Wigan and I was asked to include some fairly 'challenging'questions

One of the things I included was a question about the famous occasion when Tony Burrows appeared on TOTP three times in the same half hour show singing with three different acts and I asked the audience to name one of the acts with an extra bonus point if they could name all three - the answer of course being Eddison Lighthouse White Plains and The Brotherhood of Man

One guy in the audience stood up and said that he could name at least ten acts which included the person in question at which point I advised him that he should stick to answering the question in hand

I thought - I can do without smart asses like him - but at the end of the evening he came over to talk to me and it turned out that he got to the final of Champions League Popmaster about 5 years ago Shocked - lucky I didn't make any mistakes Smile

At the same event another question I included was to ask the audience'From a venue in which South of England town did the band Oasis take it's name?'

Some chap said that the South of England was a very big place and could I offer any clue to narrow it down a bit

Not having prepared any clue and thinking on my feet I quickly I replied that probably the most famous person from that town was the former model turned TV presenter Melinda Messenger and I added that the town in question was in the late nineties said to be in a place known as silicon valley - the answer of course being Swindon and the term silicon valley referring to places like Reading and Swindon close to the M4 technology corridor

Another member of the audience who clearly must have had a strange sense of humour blurted out 'Well that's not much of a clue is it? - It's obvious that it's going to be called silicon valley if Melinda Messenger comes from there: Laughing

At that point I thought to myself - if only I'd remembered that Diana Dors hailed from Swindon I could have saved myself a whole load of hassle Rolling Eyes

Still at least it did make the evening slightly more entertaining Smile

Tony Burrows was also a member of The Ivy League in 1965/66 (Tossing and Turning) and they metamorphosed into The Flowerpot Men who had a hit in 1967 with Let's Go To San Francisco.

He also sang vocals on First Class' hit Beach Baby Beach.

The things you learn from Wikipedia!

I knew about him singing on Beach Baby but not about the Ivy League. Come to think of it I think they were one of the support acts on one of the concerts I saw back in the day so I must have seen him live!

He must have left Brotherhood of Man before Eurovision days. Was their hit United we Stand?

Yes, Helen, it was United We Stand. The other two hits were Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes by Edison Lighthouse and My Baby Loves Lovin' by White Plains, early 1970.

Compiling a quiz must be very time consuming,ruddles...have to make sure you have all your facts right just in case (as you found) there are any PopMaster champions sat in your audience.Very Happy

My son is renowned, amongst family and friends, for his fiendishly difficult questions, when we have pop quizzes.

Tony Burrows has been a very busy bee re different groups!

It is Becky but I spend so much time on the road often driving huge distances between appointments so I use that time to think of ideas for music quizzes and the like

The trouble is these days I find I have to make notes otherwise by the time I get home I've forgotten many of them Embarassed

Enjoyed today's chart even though it wasn't what was posted on the website, 67/92.

Talk about not hearing a song for years and then it's played twice in the last 4 days. I'm talking about Topol's If I Were A Rich Man which featured on Drivetime on Wednesday I think!

I was doing my GCE 'O' levels at that time of the first chart then had 4 weeks in Austria (in Graz where some people were killed today:( ) afterwards. I suppose that was the equivalent of a 'gap year' back then LOL! Lots of memories from the songs.

Yes a great era in music Helen - A Whiter Shade of Pale is IMHO probably the greatest track ever to reach the Number One spot - and I've already specified that I want it played at my funeral which hopefully will be quite a few years away Smile

I agree, A Whiter Shade Of Pale is probably my favourite song of all time, and probably the greatest song of all time. Every time I hear the opening keyboards I'm transported back to June/July 1967 and the Summer Of Love, and spending innocent schooldays on cycling trips with my friends. Cool
