On tonight and tomorrow night (ITV)
1/2. The first of a two-part, fact-based drama, starring Jason Watkins.
It's December 2010 and retired teacher Christopher Jefferies finds his life in Bristol turned upside down when the police question him about the disappearance of his young tenant Joanna Yeates, who has gone missing just before Christmas. Her murder then becomes a major news story and the press seize upon Jefferies as a suspect, despite a lack of evidence - with destructive results.

The poor man was treated appallingly by the tabloids, mainly The Sun who decided he was guilty from the outset, just because he was a bit eccentric. |

Eight newspapers paid him substantial libel damages.

"Peter Morgan, who wrote the screenplay, explained his intentions: “No one will ever forget the man with the eccentric hair who became so connected with the murder of Joanna Yeates,” he said. “I want to make sure that no one forgets the same man who was acquitted, and who fought back to clear his name.”
For me he succeeded in his aim
What an absolute nightmare Christopher Jefferies went through for no other reason than being 'different looking'...he deserves every penny of his compensation!
Jason Watkins (who frightened me half to death as a vampire in Being Human) was excellent in the role of Mr Jefferies. |

I agree Becky. It is quite frightening to think how differently this could have all turned out, especially if Vincent Tabak had not contacted the police from Holland. It is quite scary too, to see how someone totally innocent could get caught up in what must have been a living nightmare. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I thought this was an excellent programme too. I'd enjoyed Jason Watkins in Being Human and he did a superb job in this role. His portrayal was at times moving, at others brilliantly funny with superb comic timing. _________________ Minx

Nice to see you (and your avatar ) back on the forum,Minx.
This performance by Jason Watkins and that of Toby Jones in Marvellous will,I would think, figure prominently in Bafta nominations for the coming year. |
