I've been watching the debate in the Commons today on BBC Parliament and I think it's fair to say that today will be regarded as the day the Liberal Democratic Party committed political suicide.

RIP LibDems.

Amazing as the Tories asked them to join. So you could blame Cameron for putting clegg and his party in this postion. Acts of criminal damage on the streets of London is uncalled for.

I’m not so sure. The pledge that they made was for if they’d won the election. They didn’t, they came third. We have mishmash Government at the moment- where no party can deliver all of their election manifesto pledges. This is the best advert for why we shouldn’t vote yes in the referendum for the alternative vote because this is what our Government will look like forever if we adopt that system. It’s both very brave and very stupid of the Lib-Dems to do what they have done. This is exactly the kind of Government and politics that Nick Clegg and his predecessors have been arguing for, for years. So it’s like a preview of the future- if you don’t like the look of it, don’t vote for it.

That's exactly what I was getting at, Colin. Wishy-washy- all hold hands and pretend we're friends politics doesn't work. You have to honour what you stand for- the lib dems have done that in regard to their stance on proportional power ( hence joining the tories in power) but in so doing, they have fallen on their own swords in regard to pretty much everything else they claim to have stood for. In a sense they have died for their main cause, the lib dems are now a living corpse. No one will ever trust them again. They're as good as gone already. Zero credibility. Just like Labour currently, unelectable.

On a Nick Clegg related topic, how do we feel about the Alternative Vote system being proposed / referundumed (not sure if that is a word but you know what I mean I hope) ?

I believe that every vote should count. The current First Past the Post system doesn't do that. Which is why we have people in certain areas "anti"voting and in general the LD's have always been the party that picked up that kind of vote because in some blue areas the Ld's are the next likely to win and in other red areas the same.

It makes sense for the LD's to want this (So much so they would earn 30 pieces of silver for it) the Tory's are against it as it will split their vote in the south east, Labour were against it for the same reason oop north.

Ed has come out in favour and it has taken me a little bit by surprise as it isn't a short sighted view it is the right view for us as individuals and may bring back a trust in politics after the last few years of it being erroded by all parties, and yesterday.

The only argument really against AV is that it isn't PR which would be much fairer, but what is likely to happen is more coalition governments, we don't like this one would we like the next one or the next one?

I think we should keep the present voting system

If you bring in AV or even worse PR it will result in the smallest party which won the least first choice votes being able to hold the other more popular parties to ransom if they wish to stay in power

Its a recipe for disaster in my view

I hear that Ruddles but IF the electorate have voted that way then so be it.

People feel disassociated with politics and PR would get the parliament that the electorate voted for, even if it does mean some extreme party's have a voice, but if the party's are legal then let them

I love Bill Bailey's Nick Clegg song! A pity his Desert Island Discs episode (Clegg's, not Bailey) didn't come out at the time Woolly Wolstenholme died otherwise they'd have had a great excuse to play 'Deceivers All'!
