Whatever was going on just now during the 11 o'clock news? Not content to press the wrong button once she had to do it again with a jingle Rolling Eyes

The woman shouldn't be let loose in a studio.....................

She must be the worst they've ever had, surely to goodness they could get a decent sub in for Ken?

Agreed MadeinSurrey! Or at least don't let her near the controls!

Not a good day for news broadcasts at all today, Fran Godfrey sounded like she was in a tunnel for the whole of the 7 o'clock news just now. Same on DAB and FM.

I'm amazed the studio is live when the news is on. It shows she never ran the desk when she was at Radio 1. Never mind the lovely sub is back next week.

Well as you know Helen I never listen

Even I can manage to press the right buttons when I do my live gigs and as far as I'm concerned the woman simply should not be let loose anywhere near a radio studio - or possibly even in other places Laughing

Oh well at least you had the MIGHTY KEN BRUCE back for a few days!!!!
Professional he may be but surely a presenter should be more than professional and put some vitality, some thought, some imagination or at least some effort into his show.
All his show is is just a chance for him and Gary Bones to play their favourite 90's and Noughties songs day after miserable day.
Example of conversation between the magical Ken and Gary Bones:-
"Let's play Keane, Maroon 5, Scissor Sisters, Train, Ricky Martin, Take That, Kylie and Emile Sande, shall we Gary?"
"Yes Ken we should, but to make it sound original we''ll play them in a different order everyday. We really put a lot of effort into our shows don't we Ken?"
"Just to mix things up a little bit why don't we play Elvis, Leo Sayer, Bryan Adams, Nina Simone and Toni Braxton, eh Gary?"
"Yes Ken, but the trouble is even though those artists made loads of records they only had one hit which had a fantastic DANCE REMIX version"
"Oh well Gary, if they only had one hit with a fantastic dance remix I guess that's the only records of theirs that we are going to play, there's no way I'm gonna play anything else by them."
"Also Ken, I've heard that some people who listen to Radio 2 actually like something called (I think) 60's music!!!!!!"
"Don't be silly Gary, 60's music is for people who are old, why would I play any of that rubbish when Kelly Clarkson and Alexandra Burke and loads of other fantastic artists from The X Factor have new records out"
"Well Ken, the BBC Trust said we have to cater for older (yeuchhh) people."
"OK then Gary, if we have a 2 minute slot coming up to the news, try and fit one of THOSE songs in that slot as I've heard they're all very short."
"Brilliant idea Ken, you really are such a man of the people, you really do care about all your audience don't you."
"Thanks Gary, and don't forget when I go to the toilet after Popmaster you must put on one of those long songs, there is that list of 15 songs that we made ages ago it must be one of those, I don't want you to use your initiative and try and look up anything else, OK?"
"Will do Ken, that's nearly all the show covered now, just have room for 2 more records what do you think we should play?"
"I've got it, how about "Human" by The Killers and anything by Coldplay?"
"Amazing Ken, that is EXACTLY what I was thinking, we are great aren't we mate. Maybe we can do it all again exactly the same tomorrow?"
"Of course we will Gary old boy, you don't think I'm going to go home and try and make a great show for tomorrow do you?".

Not sure if this will suit you Number Six but I listen a lot to this station on my internet radio. They are 6 hours behind but I quite like the 10 in a row that they do regularly throughout the day.

In fact it's been on more than Radio 2 of late. Sad

Haha. The thing is... that is why Radio 2 hired Gary Bones for the slot. They wanted the blandness he brought to Richard Allinson's shows replicated across the whole network - the Ken Bruce show is supposed to set the music agenda for the station (more's the pity).

I guess it got the results bosses wanted as the ratings have all gone up, but it's a great shame. Ken's pre-Eurovision show was a recent example of how marvelous he can be when allowed to be a bit more freewheeling.

Ian

I agree Ken's pre-Eurovision show was great but I think Gary Bones was out there with him.

Yeah, I think he was too (although a few other names were mentioned at the end) but I just think that not having to stick to a house style did the show a world of good, and the conversations gave Ken a chance to shine.

Totally agree with you Ian and Helen, Ken is like a different person when he does something different like his pre Eurovision show.
Didn't he do something similar a while back on board a ship? I can't remember what it was for.
I still think that if you are a senior presenter on Radio 2 you should at least pick up on the fact that you are playing the same records every day and have the bottle to say "Come on Gary, this is Radio 2 and there are millions of different records that were popular and made the charts that we can play"
I wouldn't want it to be obscure records just a variety of popular stuff.
I know that a lot of you don't like Christ Evans but even though his producer is going more towards the Gary Bones style at least you get some Beatles or Kinks etc every now and then.
Also his show is not so stuck in the playlist rut as Ken's is, like when he was talking to Lee Westwood (in his car) the other morning and he said it was his caddies birthday. Chris then asked him what was his caddies favourite music was and he replied 80's stuff, so after the interview was over they played a montage of 80's music for his birthday.
Things like that make shows so much more refreshing than just playing the same records everyday just at different times.

And I'm sure he does. And I'm sure other presenters do, too. But I'm also sure the producers turn around and tell them that they're only doing what they're told to do - and that the station is being run by bean-counting idiots who have little passion for real radio and who don't really give a toss.

Unfortunately, it's part of the reason why I've all but given up on R2 and increasingly listening to alternatives like Radio Caroline, whose presenters play what they think is right for the audience and are trusted to put their programmes together without the need for producers at all. And they don't need to resort to all the current gimmicks and distractions that people like Chris Evans feel compelled to employ as a means of masking the fact that they have little of any substance to share with listeners.

Oddly enough, what goes around comes around - it's the stuck-in-the-mud philosophy of the BBC that gave rise to Radio Caroline on Easter Sunday 1964. Last Saturday, when Graham Norton was camping it up in his predictable style with all the usual predictable rubbishy Radio 2 music, Peter Antony was rummaging through a pile of CDs - some of them "old" but a surprising number of them from new, younger, acts whom I'd not heard of before - and giving us a range of music that knocks the socks off boring R2.

That's the kind of radio I want. Unfortunately neither the Radio controller nor many of the producers have any idea what they're supposed to be doing or why they're there (apart from receiving a fairly generous salary each month).

I'm sure if the controller had the guts to advise the producers to stay at home for the day and leave the show to the presenters, shows like Ken's would be much, much better. And if the presenters were told that they could ditch all the crappy "features" and the naff "interactivity" they'd be even better!

Pigs will, of course, fly before such a momentous event were ever to occur on R2.

Have to agree about Chris (doesn't he play a Beatles track every day?) - the way he messes around with the records is great fun, and adds to the spontaneity of the show. Mind you, it would be nice if he knew much about music - the other day he accidentally played half-an-hour of Trevor Horn without realising it!

An example of this came last night, when Janice Long apologised for only having the same few Mumford & Co songs on her system to be able to choose from.

I think, in many cases, if the presenter/producer don't plan every record in advance (and bring them in themselves) they don't have much choice. Which is ridiculus - it's like the average iPhone carries more tracks than the Radio 2 system.

Well, I'm blowed! I was listening to Zoe this morning when she said 'Led Zeppelin in a minute'.
I nearly turned off, suspecting it would be Stairway To Heaven yet again or the awful All Of My Love, when suddenly the superb Rock 'n' Roll was played!

There's no way Ken Bruce or Gary Bones would have picked that one.

Interestingly, I tuned in to Jeremy Vine just as he introduced "Soul Love" by David Bowie (from my favourite Bowie album "Ziggy Stardust"). I was pleasantly surprised at the choice. After all, this was daytime Radio 2 wasn't it?

Sorry to disappoint you, but I heard Zoe read out something from a listener complimenting her on the music this morning. Zoe said it was all down to Gary not her............ Confused

Bowie's 'Soul Love' is indeed an unusual choice for JV to play, as his musical choices are usually utterly banal (eg A-Ha's Take On Me every five minutes).

I bet he'd never heard of the song until today and only played it because I think Radio 2 are doing a 40th anniversary programme on the album.

Actually he's big Bowie fan, as I've heard him say many times before. I think he was even quoting the track number on the album today.
