R2s weekend output is pretty poor as a rule....there are highs and lows.
SOTS is mostly ok, GN can be annoying but it's not a bad show. And then POTP is good as they are trying to mix in a few songs that you had forgotten about. TB's humour - or lack of it - is starting to wear thin now though..
My opinion, for what it's worth, is that there are better things to do on a weekend than listen to a radio, whatever channel it is that you choose to listen to..
R2s output is not actually as bad or as R1 as you might think.. Try retuning to R1 for more than 30 mins. I'll guarantee you'll agree it's nothing more than a big noise with all the jocks saying "like" or "whatever" as very other word.....or "who knew??"..... Honestly, you need to be down wit da kids to understand this.
Problem is with R2s weekend output is they've got rid of all the good presenters such as StuMac, Jonathan Ross and all the other decent ones have been shifted to evening slots when no one is listening....and they just put bloody Slebs in their place....Alan Carr and Mel Northern Bird, Liza Tarbrush, Anneka, Kermit O'Leary..
Am I the only one who thinks Kermit has the same band in every week as they always sound the bloody same to me. |

Agree about the presenters and about Kermit!
I don't hear much of R2 on Saturdays after SOTS these days, but quite like Ryan Tubridy when Graham Norton's away.

It`s not just the weekend shows that all sound the same. Most of the weekday/overnight shows follow a fixed pattern too. The same every day. I've noticed that several shows ask questions on Twitter and Facebook and the answers people give are used as the framework for a show a few days later. The random organic-ness and warmth has gone. Everything is planned down to the last text. They may as well pre-record every show: they present the show as a live, living, breathing entity but the reality is they`re the output of a what was very likely a rather dull meeting in a bland office a few days earlier. You can`t fool intuition. What was once a great station of individual shows, each with their own personality, life and audience, has become a one size fits all corporate cliche` in a shiny box. Radio 2 has become McDonalds. There , I said it.
I blame the use of Wise Buddah and that other useless production company.
The only show that half gets away with it is The Breakfast Show but only then because Chris Evans is big enough to break the odd corporate rule.

Ah but where would they go to Rachel? Not many openings elsewhere so they stay where they are.

Well that's the 250,000k+ a year question, Helen. There is nowhere to go. There are so many radio and tv channels now that DJs are two a penny but there is the thing.... if DJs are two a penny, why don`t R2 hire all the good ones instead of celebs? Perhaps, because they have too much self respect.
I've been looking into starting an internet radio station- only looking ... just for a bit of fun. It's actually very easy to do and with all that techno stuff out there, it's possible to listen to internet radio in your car, which hitherto has been the domain of broadcast radio only.
If I were a proper , well respected DJ, I'd start my own station on the interweb- even if it mean't earning nothing for a while. If proper old fashioned style radio shows become available, proper old fashioned radio listeners will tech-up and tune in. And if you got a little group of proper DJs ... well......there is the future. |

I've not heard of any of those DJs. and that`s the problem. all the popular DJs on 2 are terrified to leave because they know that their fans won`t follow them (well, some would) but in the main there aren`t really that many fans, most people just put the radio on and listen, you can put out any old rubbish and they`ll still listen... if you leave they`ll listen to your replacement and most listeners won`t notice you left. |

There's a new internet station http://allhitradio.uk.com/.
One of the DJs Jason Reynolds and some may recognise his name. He was on the BBC boards and was on Radio Jackie for a while.

You haven't heard of them now (except Emperor Rosko) but it launched with Mike Read, Tony Blackburn, David Hamilton, etc all living and broadcasting together... but it fell apart.

This is true, although I find it odd that Classic FM make such a big deal of their high-profile presenters (such as ex-Radio 2 jocks Aled Jones and Alan Titchmarsh) but barely give them time to breathe, much less express any opinion. Presumably if station bosses think your name is enough to get a following, a DJ has some kind of leeway. |

Aled Jones and Tichmarsh.... DJs .... now you're having a laugh.
Those early names I can remember... maybe they just didn't give it long enough..... technology has moved on.... it's so much easier to listen in other ways now. They should try again but I guess discovering that they do not in fact have a massive fan base as they thought, then maybe they won't. At least 2 gives the jocks an impression of popularity...no doubt why they stay. |

Maybe that's why they call them presenters, DJs they are not!

There's nothing wrong with harnessing modern technology for presenters to interact with listeners in my view but it needs to be done in an intelligent way and not with saturated coverage like we get on the SW show
I'm getting to the point where apart from the half hour after 3pm I often switch off because I'm sick of hearing about 'Viral Videos' not to mention Facebook and the like - I'm really not interested what people are saying or doing on social websites and if I was I would make a point of checking them but I don't - I choose to listen to a radio station to get away from such dross but it seems very difficult these days
By the way Rach - if you do get your internet station up and running any chance of a gig as I've lost my regular Saturday night one so could do with some extra cash _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It was quite a tense show this week, we were on the edge of our pillows, we waited 40 minutes for the first one but then the floodgates ' literally' opened. It was all Right Said Fred's fault. Hubby won this week- I had to make the tea during the 7am news. I know: you dream of having a life as exciting as mine, then I had to take the dog out.
Not becuase it's too difficult and requires skills, equipment and resources that I don't have and of course I'd like nothing better than to show R2 how it should be done but becuase I can't be bothered with such a low level distraction at the moment, I've temporarily shelved my plans to open a radio station to rival R2, Rudds, but as soon as I dust them off again, you can be sure of a slot.

All true. Even Alex's show bears the markings of lots of advance planning (not necessarily by the Dark Lord himself). Since Wise Buddah took over it has become faster-paced, less anarchic, less spontaneous, less fun, to be honest. But it does seem to have attracted more audience participation.
I have to admit that most of the time during the day I prefer to take advantage of the random shuffle of my own music collection which I've uploaded onto iTunes, uninterrupted by endless texts, lists, factoids etc

Well there are quite a few in existence. The technology is no problem, but I suspect that expense might be (two groups of the the original Radio Trent DJs of the 70s, displaced when it was bought by GWR, then Capital, launched internet stations. One is still going, but in a somewhat truncated, repetitive form) _________________ Ron |
