Very sad to hear that - he was a true icon of radio - I haven't really liked the style of shows he's done over recent years but I will never forget his sixties prime time appearances on shows like 'Juke Box Jury' and of course he was one of the original presenters on TOTP
A sad day for us all really I think _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I can't express how sad I am to hear this news. From Journey Into Space in my teenage years to many years of lovely Sunday night shows with "our kind of music" ... |

I am very sad to hear this news, it seems that everyone we grew up watching and listening to are passing away. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I agree, sad news, but not unexpected.
Juke Box Jury and TOTP did so much for British pop music in the mid 60s. |

Lovely, fond tribute from Ken this morning. I think Zoe did something too, but I missed that (no doubt Chris would have made a big deal if he was in). I think Jo Whiley was a bit overwhelmed by being on air when the news came out. |

Jeremy's first topic today is David's life.

Oh so sad, but at least he worked till the end, has been given a dignified departure, one presumes, of his own volition, I'm sure he wanted to broadcast to the end despite sounding very weak, and not forcibly retired like others.
David has been with me all my musical life from teen years when he was on Juke Box Jury on TV and to the lighter music on R2. _________________ -

Would like to go along with everyone and express my sadness at the news of David's passing, such sad news.
Must agree with John W and thank goodness that David carried on working and wasn't dumped like Radio 2 have done with some of their older stars.
Does anyone remember him appearing on Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, I thought he was really good in that episode. |

I'd almost forgotten about that Gaz but now you mention it yes I do remember and he played a great part - by simply being himself _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Although it was plain to hear the last time he broadcast that he was far from well it was still a shock,to me,when I heard he had died... when he said he would be back for the odd show now and then I clung (foolishly perhaps) to that in my mind.
As nod says with his death comes, very sadly, the end of an era ....
Found out from Last Word on Radio 4 that he was the first straight man for Benny Hill but only lasted one programme because he couldn't keep his face straight! |

Becky, thank you for mentioning Last Word. I should have realised that yesterday's programme would have featured him. I will listen and record it on tape on Sunday evening.
Actually I saw on the BBC Breakfast Show this morning that tape cassettes are making a bit of a comeback so perhaps I needn't feel embarrassed after all . |
