I've been listening to JW's Sunday 27th Feb show and just had to say how nice it was to hear tracks from two if the very finest bands from the 1970s - Stackridge and The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver.
Although it's a pity that "Arms of Mary" is all that could be mustered up to represent the latter, I can live with it.
He also mentioned that Stackridge is playing just down the road from me at The Stables late in April. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!! |

| Twas a good show this week- well it's always a good show with JW and good advice too. ( You can never play just one Punk track) We were in Cornwall listening on our little black DAB. It's a bit odd being somewhere different but doing the exactly the same thing that you do at home. Sunday, JW, Roast Chicken and the MoS crossword with a bottle of beer for hubby and a Mars Milk for me. For years middle-age just trots over there in the distance but then, wham: it’s sitting comfortably in your lap like a sleeping puppy – yeah we struggle at first, the mid life crisis car, the fake tan and OMG, using text speak but after a while, you think, hang-on … this is not so bad, it’s a nice a place, get the fire on, JW on the radio, tall slim bottle of cactus cooler, a box of Just Brazils, feet up, a little checked blanket over your lap: so much better than Sky Diving. |

It's all right but...
Apart from Ian Matthews and Chris Rainbow there was nothing played that you wouldn't hear at any other time on Radio 2... and what did aviddiva say about Candi Staton?  (on the Sounds of the Sixties thread).

I haven't listened to SOT70s for some time. There's only so much My Sweet Lord/Brown Sugar I can take, though a glimpse at the music played this week shows it was pretty good.
It does annoy me when JW features an album and only plays the hit singles (eg with Blondie's Parallel Lines last week).
JW spent the late 60s and 70s championing album tracks and not chart fodder. He should do the same now.
And, gosh, Johnnie, I never knew Bridge Over Troubled Water came from the album Bridge Over Troubled Water. |

Yes, I agree. To be honest, I think this kind of thing is imposed upon him and the production team from above. It's almost as if it's station policy to play the most obvious tracks as a way of appeasing those who might switch off as soon as they hear something "obscure"!
That was certainly my reaction to JW's playing "Arms of Mary" from SB&Q; a much better track would be the superb "World In Action" or "Beat of the Street" (both of which really do demonstrate what excellent wordsmiths and musicians they were - especially Tim Renwick's lead guitar work) but, no, we have to have the obvious one.
On a slightly different, though not entirely unconnected, note - I heard somebody on R2 recently announce a newer version of Rod Stewart's classic "Sailing".
Er, wrong. Gavin Sutherland wrote the song that first appeared on The Sutherland Bros' "Lifeboat" album! |

That's right Colin, I distinctly remember hearing the Sutherland Brothers' original back in 1972! It just shows what ignoramuses Radio 2 employ for their research.
Coming back to JW's music, you'd think that he would have enough clout and nous to challenge the powers that be. It really is time for a decent rock show on R2 on say Friday night, as was the case with Steve Harley, and preferably more than an insulting half an hour. |

I completely agree Schiz
Sounds of the Seventies has reached the end of the road and Johnnie Walker is wasted on that show
Rock music is not properly catered for on Radio 2 at present and we need a specialist rock show playing a wide variety of rock including heavy metal, punk, soft rock and even grunge
I think true rock fans like me really miss Tommy Vance and of course the great Fluff

To be honest, I can't see that he does any more. Gone are the days when Jim Moir would have put up with all of Johnnie's excesses and given him another chance (if you haven't read his autobiography, I recommend it heartily!). Shennan obviously has a completely different, if illogical, agenda and I can't see that JW's career is a priority.
It could well be that SOT70s is Johnnie's swansong on R2. He'll never get another Drivetime or breakfast stand-in gig so what's left? It's no wonder that he's devoting more time to his "one-man shows" around the country. I think I would in his shoes.
I can just see a time when he's presented with a fait-a-complis like Mark Lamarr was and maybe Johnnie, too, will tell Shennan to poke it where the sun don't shine as well!
I wouldn't blame him if he did. That would then reduce my R2 listening time to 4 hours per week as opposed to the 6 at present. |

It's odd.
Brian Matthew (Phil Swern compiling) gets to play less familiar, even obscure, records on Sounds of the Sixties at peak/breakfast time on Saturday (and we get complaints about it here), and yet Johnnie Walker (with Phil Swern again most of the time) serves up nearly all obvious, hackneyed stuff on Sounds of the 70s in the middle of Sunday afternoon.
Perhaps it is in the wrong timeslot.

I don't think Phil Swern has anything to do with SOT70s Ron. Johnnie always gives the producer's name at the end and it's never heard Swern's name in all the weeks I've been listening.

Oh, right. He must have done once, because I remember hearing it, and it was one of the occasions when he played a duff Badfinger re-recording, but I don't often get to listen (to anything) on Sunday afternoon.

It was good to hear Stackridge's version of the Beatles' Hold Me Tight, but I want to hear other songs by them on air (e.g. Dangerous Bacon).

Yes, I agree.
I mentioned in a Twitter "tweet" that I was pleased to hear JW mention that they were playing a gig in late April at the Stables Theatre in Milton Keynes (the place that Cleo Laine and the late John Dankworth set up) and lo and behold I found that Stackridge was soon following me on Twitter! |

Can't believe we haven't mentioned SOT70s since this last post ???
Anyways just catching up with last week's as the playlist looked good, Poco's Cimarrron just one, Not sure if he's live or not, will be able to tell after the news probably. I don't get to listen so much these days but he sounded good last Sunday (16th)

Yes, it's funny how SOT60s gets so many mentions here but not SOT70s.
I enjoy SOT70s and like JW but as I've said before I just wish he'd play more album tracks rather than the obvious well known songs. Looking at the playlist I see there were only two album tracks played today. Still, at least he hasn't played My Sweet Lord or Brown Sugar for all of two weeks now. |

It very rarely gets aired. I can only think of one other occasion when I've heard the album version of 'Love Is Like Oxygen' on Radio 2, and that was about 10 years ago when Chris Hawkins (of 6 music) was sitting in for Alex Lester (as he used to do at that time) I remember not even knowing there was an extended version of 'Love Is Like Oxygen' at the time.
