He was very good broadcast journalist and I missed him when he retied from our screens. I've just been listening to a fine tribute on Radio 4's The World At One.

Ah, that's sad news.
He was everything a great reporter should be, the story was important not him (Sky news reporters take note)

Nobody since his retirement has ever surpassed - or even matched - his great style and communication skills in the world of politics - and that's the greatest tribute to his superb talent

A truly great political brain who will be sadly missed

Yep, actually I think it applies to most reporters these days.

We shouldn't confuse "Current Affairs Show Hosts" with Reporters and Editors , though. Paxo and Vine are now in the latter category, but I've always respected the likes of John Sargeant , John Simpson and Kate Adie. Sargeant said this week that John Cole was very much hos mentor in his earlier days at BBC News and his autobiography supports this.

I really like John Humphries on the R4 Today programme. He's not a reporter though!

But you don't see much of Kate Adie & John Sargeant these days (unfortunately)
I like Humphrys on Mastermind but can't stand him on the Today program, much prefer James Naughtie.
One decent reporter I can think of is the lady who reports on military issues, Caroline Wyatt I think her name is.

Anyway, sorry to take this topic off topic, maybe I ought to start another thread about it.
