Anyone watch the first part of this last night? I enjoyed it as brought the early 60s all back to me. How times have changed!

We have just watched the recording of it which we made last night.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and realise how much I missed by living in a small village in the South. There was nothing, not even a pale imitation.......I definitely had a deprived start in life! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I'm not a fan of Cilla but I'm watching this for a nostalgic look back ...goes without saying I'm enjoying the music. |

Bill Kenwright was full of praise for this drama (and Sheridan Smith) on his programme last night.
He played Some Other Guy by The Big Three ,which was featured in Cilla,in tribute to Johnny Gustafson their bass player and singer who died on September the 12th. |

I thought Sheridan Smiths singing was better than Cilla's.
Enjoying the series. |

Yes so did I. Sheridan also seems more likeable to me as Cilla, than Cilla herself. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Brian Epstein came across as a tortured soul in this drama, which was sad to see. |

Great series, and great recreations of recording studios with George Martin, Epstein, Bacharach etc
I would like id they had recreated Cilla's wedding (part 2) in Liverpool, but here's the real thing from Pathe

Brian Epstein was indeed a tortured soul.
As shown last night, he was worried about Cilla's career, and was also depressed by The Beatles' decision to stop touring in 1966. He didn't like the idea of the lads becoming experimental (Revolver, Sergeant Pepper), preferring the old 'mop top' Beatles.
All that, plus his homosexuality, and his father's death a few months previously....no wonder people concluded he committed suicide. |

It almost seemed as if he deliberately chose a violent 'boyfriend' to punish himself for being homosexual.
He was almost as famous as The Beatles at that time so I wondered if there were pictures of him with black eyes etc from (quite regular it seems) beatings or did he go into hiding at times?

Well I assume that he was just being blackmailed by a thug "If you don't carry on sleeping with me and pay be £200 a night then I'll go to the papers" sort of thing. And if Brian complained he also got a beating. _________________ -

You could well be right,John...I hadn't thought of that. He just seemed to loathe himself so much that that's why I thought as I did. |
