I enjoyed this programme,Helen.
La Mer by Charles Trenet sends tingles down my spine every time I hear it. On my list of favourite songs ever...love it.
Lots of music I heard on this proramme (The Lennon and McCartney of France??) that I would like to find out more about but probably won't find the time!!
I have heard of Johnny Hallyday but don't (to my knowledge) know one song that he sings. I don't think he broke through here as Aznavour and the like did, unless I missed it.. |

I enjoyed it too. I would like to have seen and heard more of Charles Trenet and Jean Sablon as I always enjoy both but, apart from La Mer which I love, I have always had trouble in knowing which one I was hearing - silly, I know |

I recorded it and still have it to watch, but I love La Mer as well so am looking forward to it!
I remember Johnny Halliday only because someone in my class had a French pen friend and sent her one of his EPs and another classmate lived in Paris for a year as her Dad was manager of Burton's the tailors (remember them?) there, so had a few French records. At the end of term the French teacher brought in a record player and we listened to some of them.
I always liked Richard Anthony who did gorgeous covers of some of Dusty Springfield's tracks. Of course it was the day when songs were still covered a lot of the time rather than the original making a world wide hit. How things have changed!

Did you like any of the Johnny Hallyday,Helen?
Love If I Loved You by Richard Anthony and can remember talking about it on the old Radio 2 board. Did you know that he died this April ....he was 77.
(I remember Burtons...are they still going?) |

I didn't really like Johnny Halliday that much, he was a bit too rock for me at that time, apart from the songs that were on my friend's record. I remember recording it on a reel to reel tape recorder at the time and eventually got the songs from that download site that wasn't quite kosher (can't remember it's name!!) when everyone was into it. One was Ma Guitare which was flamenco style and the other was Pour moi Ma Vie Va Commencer. They may be on You Tube.
Oh Becky I didn't know that Richard Anthony had died. I wonder if they did a tribute on SOTS and I missed it? Maybe I'll email Brian Matthew. I loved his voice.
I think Burtons eventually became part of Top Shop but I'm not certain.

Apparently Hallyday was called "The French Elvis",Helen.
I'm sure as I can be that there has been no mention of Richard Anthony's death on SOTS. Would be nice if Brian gave him a mention.
Thanks for posting some of his songs...I enjoyed listening to them...he had a lovely voice.
The second one ...Si Tu As Besoin D'un Ami... is maddeningly familiar as if I've heard someone sing it in English...any ideas?? |

Becky it's driving me mad now but I think it's one of those songs that just sounds like another! I see The Swinging Blue Jeans.......... but I don't think it's one of theirs.
I've been on Youtube for ages and found a load of others I remembered, a nice way to waste time .
Sad that he has died though RIP Richard.
H
PS the song's English title was Come To Me but that doesn't ring any bells _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!
