The time for this slot on Ken's show seems to have changed to 11.30 rather than around 10 minutes later all of this week.

Anyone know if this is permanent and why?

JV used to be on around 11.30 so I'm guessing that they've switched it round because of wanting to keep their options open on the latest election news if anything happens at short notice - just my theory but I could be wrong Confused

I too wondered if that was the reason Ruddles. I suppose we'll have to see what happens after the election, and I'll be glad when it's over!

Looks like it was just for last week as it was back to normal today. Must have been something to do with the election and JV show, we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

I really enjoyed this week's Tracks Of My Years on Ken's show featuring Les Reed. Nice tracks and good stories to go with them and other bits too.

Yes it was excellent - didn't realise that the man was in his early eighties but he still seems very active in the music business Smile

I was shocked when he gave his age as well Ruddles. I guess we are all getting on but don't think of it!

I enjoy listening to people like him who really know their stuff rather than some of the younger ones who get on and really haven't lived at all.

I did enjoy hearing 'Not ready to make nice' by The Dixie Chicks on Ken Bruce's show today.

Yesterday Jimmy Tarbuck chose a Dusty Springfield track on his Tracks of my Years saying she was underrated.. I was a little surprised to hear him say that as I don't feel she was at all.

Myself and all of my friends were all aware of what a great talent she was back then....and I don't think we were on our own....we all adored her.

A very special woman...one of Britain's best.

She was indeed Becky, I heard him talking about her. I wonder if her nerves held her back a bit though?

They could well have,Helen, but I don't think she was ever underrated.
I remember looking forward to her Saturday (?) night show ,wondering what sort of dress she would be wearing and how her hair was going to be styled. Very Happy

To celebrate Radio 2's 50th birthday the Tracks of My Year's playlist is chosen (this week) by Michael Aspel, Des Lynam, Gloria Hunniford, Judith Chalmers and Aled Jones

Tuned into Ken this morning just in time to hear Michael Aspel choosing his tracks. Really nice to hear him. Tomorrow it 's the old smoothie Des Lynan Cool Very Happy who will be choosing a couple of tracks.
Pity we don't hear or see much of those two these days..perhaps they're too busy enjoying their retirement.

Yes it was lovely to hear Michael and I'm looking forward to hearing the others to come!

I'm enjoying all the former presenters coming back for the anniversary.

Agreed. Michael Aspel was interesting and I liked his choices of music, Something Stupid and Up Up and Away. I think I like that type of song more now than when they were released. It's called getting old!

I look forward to the next four days.

If I had been listening not knowing who it was,Helen,I would never have guessed it was Des! His voice is definitely different to what it used to be Was still good to hear him reminisce though and I liked his choice of music.

Was it Groundhog day today on Ken Bruce? I was sure I'd heard Des Lynham on Tracks of My Years and that we had talked about it on here.

Well my memory didn't deceive as it was only September last year.

Times must be even harder than we thought at the Beeb................ Rolling Eyes

I was thinking that as well. Does anyone else remember when he used to do the Friday Drivetime show? He didn't mention it, only his sports show, which I don't remember! Of course these were alongside his TV work.

Yes I remember when he did Drivetime on Fridays LEE. It was when Johnnie still did his Saturday afternoon show as well as Drivetime for the rest of the week.

Des may mention Drivetime later in the week. If you read the posts further up this thread you'll see when it was last on.

Very strange...........

I think he's back,to finish what he started,Helen, because when he was on last time it was with four others who were choosing their tracks...so just two each. It was a special week of Tracks of my Years to celebrate Radio 2's 50th birthday

Ah that would explain it Becky, and the date of the last one would coincide with the anniversary! I wasn't listening to Ken until just before Tracks of My Years.

Des chose There's No Business Like Show Business by Ethel Merman as one of his tracks and went on to say a little about her. He said she had been married four times...one of the times to Ernest Borgnine which only lasted a few weeks....and there is a story about the two which he couldn't repeat on radio .. I know the story he means...I read it a good while ago... Shocked Laughing

Oh, do tell, Becky.... Twisted Evil

I really liked what I heard of Des. Must get on to the site and hear them all.

Today, Jean-Jacques Burnel, choise Nowhere To Run, by Martha and the Vandellas. Once of the instances where backing vocals enhance a track, as opposed to taking away from it...I'm thinking The Jordanaires here...they leave me cold, on those early Presley records.

Anyway...Nowhere To Run....is there better music than early Motown, I wonder? How lucky were were, to experience the 60's and all it's magic.

I totally agree about us being lucky to experience the 60s. No matter what they say there really hasn't been anything to surpass it.

I also sometimes wonder if it wasn't just the music but the whole lifestyle thing as you couldn't do so much of what we did then today. I'm not talking of doing anything illegal but just that we were so much more free then. I suppose the 'red tape' brigade hadn't got going.

I was at the pictures the other day,Helen, and saw a trailer for a live Q and A with Michael Caine on the 14th of March.

This engaging and playful documentary, narrated by and starring the inimitable Michael Caine, chronicles the cultural revolution of the Swinging Sixties and the societal upheaval it cause that still resonates today.

**Cast:** Michael Caine, Twiggy, Paul McCartney, David Bailey

Nice choice from Jamie Cullen as one of his tracks this week. A Frank Sinatra song I've never heard before.

Thanks for that Becky! I've always liked that one, my Dad was a huge fan and I had all his CDs to dispose of 2 years ago although I did keep one or two.

I missed Ken this morning so I'll listen back for Jamie. I miss his show now that it's on at 8 and of course will be even later in the new year Mad. I'm very much a live radio person and am never in complete earshot when I have to use iPlayer or that Sounds thing so forget most of the time.

The World We Knew was the first track that Moira Stuart ever played.

I had that album back in the very early seventies and had forgotten all about it. I seem to remember that that was the best track along with "Drinking Again", a return to his "set em up Joe" style.

Just stumbled across this today. Ken Bruce's Tracks Of My Years (for one week) all in one programme. It's on at 3 am every Friday night/morning

I listened to, and enjoyed, the choices of Richard Stilgoe this morning.

Well done to whoever thought of this.

I have it set to record now every week. Smile

Very Happy

He's a bit of a novice really though ...similar principle, different programme -Elisabeth Schwartzkopf picked 7 of her own recordings + the eighth was the instrumental prelude to an opera recording, in which she was the star, when she did a stint on Desert Island Discs.

It's Nile Rodgers who does my head in. He picked all his own songs on Desert Island Discs then when asked to pick the songs which defined the 80s on Radio 2 the other week picked 4 of his!

Jessie Buckley's TOMY, was a lovely selection of songs. Apart from Nancy Wilson's murdering of Ode To Billie Joe, which should never have been allowed to leave the recording studio.
Aside from that, well worth a listen with a nice cup of tea or coffee.

Yes, pretty good choices there. I love I'd Rather Go Blind (and Chicken Shack's version too). Not heard the version of Ode but Bobby Gentry's 1967 one is sublime.

I'm enjoying this weeks TOMY too.
