I don't know why really but John Lennon's Imagine always brings a lump to my throat-guess it's such a powerful song.
Any songs out there that do something similar to you. |

Without You by Nilsson.
He didn't write it.
2 guys from Badfinger Pete Ham and Tom Evans wrote it but sadly both committed suicide in 1975 and 1983 respectively.
It is a very moving song which was played at a funeral i went to about 25 years ago.
Hairs on the neck and the rest.
When the chorus kicks in it gets me everytime.
Not keen on the Mariah Carey one but the Nilsson IS a classic _________________ The Voice of reason in a MAD MAD world |

Interesting Mike.
Nilssons Without You moving for you at a funeral-I remember snogging my childhood sweeteheart who later became my wife to this song at the local disco.
We are no longer married!
Same song but different emotions to each of us. |

Loving You by Minnie Riperton.
The Crickets' Don't Ever Change.
Gerry and the Pacemakers' account of You'll Never Walk Alone.
Kathleen Ferrier's version of Handel's Art Thou Troubled?
Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe--the moment when Iolanthe reveals to her husband, the Lord Chancellor, that she is living, when he thought she had been dead for 25 years.
There must be many, many others. I'll have a think but look forward to reading more of yours.

Ian-Good choices.
I had the privalege some years ago at being at Parkhead the home of Celtic FC when 60,000 fans sang the soccer anthem of "You'll Never Walk Alone" when collecting the Premiership crown at the end of one particular season with all their scarfs held above their heads.
It was incredibly moving-so much emotion-a truly awesome experience and something I will never ever forget. |

I think Rolf's version is a great laugh, however, only Led Zep's version can make me very emotional, every time I hear it.

Remember by Harry Nilsson
This song makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. _________________ Geddon

You have impeccable taste Julia, it was murdered by Whitney Houston, IMHO. ( From the interview with Dolly Paton, it was her opion as well! )

thanks BB
before I heard the dolly parton version i thought it was just a rubbish, cheesy song
It really is suprising how much a difference the singer has on the song!
If it comes up on Itunes on shuffle I have to quickly press next - I have no idea what it is about that song that opens flood gates - how embarrassing! |

Julia, if memory serves, it is the song that is sung (by Dolly) at the end of the last scene as the character played by Burt Reynolds leaves. As the house ( the best little whorehouse in Texas) fades into the distance, and dolly is watching him go. _________________ Geddon

I don't know when or where she wrote it, but it is the film context that I remember. _________________ Geddon

She originally wrote it for Porter Wagner, when she was leaving his radio show after they had worked together for a few years. I seem to recall Dolly saying, in a recent interview, that Porter Wagner was very upset at her leaving his radio show to broaden her music career and it was her way of saying that even though their paths now parted she would always be grateful for his faith and support. She also said there was nothing other than a professional working relationship between them. She re-recorded this song for the film "Greatest Little Whore House In Texas" in which she stared with Burt Reynolds.

Who Wants To Live Forever by Queen.
My Dad was dying of cancer. I rented the video of "Highlander" in which this song features as part of the soundtrack, for us to watch.
I had no idea the movie was about immortality, and the song relates to an immortal man always having to watch those he loves grow old and die while he continues to live on.
Dad loved the movie.... the song makes me blub like a baby everytime I hear it.
Misty-eyed just typing this.
Most of what I learned about life and how to live it was taught to me by my Dad.
Thanks Dad x _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

Ahh Queen... I have on video...the programme shown by the BBC when Freddie Mercury died. It contains a video of 'These are the days of our lives'. At no time during the video are the band shown together...that guitar bit that Brian does is superbly shot and sends shivers down my spine. At the end Freddie looks at the camera and whispers 'I still love you'. Weep my friend, he was saying goodbye _________________ treasure

"Run, rabbit run" by Flannagan and Allen. The reference to "his gun, gun, gun" is the bit I don't much like.

"Goodnight Irene" as sung by massed Bristol Rovers' supporters after 'The Gas' have scored a goal / won a match.
"Fairytale of New York" , which due to it's seasonal nature is always played a lot on the radio around the anniversary of Kirsty MacColl's tragic and untimely death. _________________ . . . From The Asteroid Belt, Peter de Meteor |

Mention of Kirsty McColl reminded me of Days, which is also worth a nomination.
The Kinks' version is one of my special favourites so it says a lot for KMcC that I like her version very nearly as much.

A couple more:
"When I Was On Horseback" - Steeleye Span, and
"Dance This Mess Around" - The B-52's (when she plaintively sings: "Why won't you dance with me?"). _________________ . . . From The Asteroid Belt, Peter de Meteor |

Behind Geddon's Wall was right in choosing Harry Nilsson's 'Remember'- this also appeared in the film 'You've Got Mail' alongside 'The Puppy Song' and 'I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City'.
I was watching this film on DVD when I got the news from my mum that my brother was seriously injured and in hospital. He was on a life support and died about three days later. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.
