Quote: | Its new range of goods include a collapsible wheelchair and fold-up walking sticks as well as bathroom aids such as shower seats and raised toilet seats.
Asda hopes the new range, which will also be catered towards younger people with disabilities or those with sports injuries, will help "eradicate the stigma" around disability. |

Great idea. Shame that Asda have to do this, and not the government set up a way to obtain these products? |

I think it's a great idea - why would we want the government interfering, they do enough of that! _________________ MiS |

I think it's a great idea, they are perhaps not that easy to come by for some folks who don't have internet, etc.
Good for Asda. |

You're the one who's posting this stuff.
So... what is the issue with the wheelchairs exactly? I still don't see what the deal is. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

What you mean the issue with the wheelchairs? I have no issue. I was just saying." Why do Asda a Supermarket need to start a sell these types of products? It goes to show how bad this country is in. I'm sure they are at a standard, or they wouldn't be able to sell them? |

So what's the point of the post?
mark occomore wrote: | I was just saying." Why do Asda a Supermarket need to start a sell these types of products? |
Perhaps because it's likely that people might want to buy them?
My wife got her mother a wheelchair a few years back because she has severe osteoporosis. She bought it at Argos (for whom she used to work). So why not?
Asda isn't first to sell wheelchairs. Loads of businesses do and have done for years.

Why is the country in a bad way because Asda chooses of offer wheelchairs in the way that others have done for years?
I still don't understand what the issue here is Mark. But perhaps I never will... _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I'm not making any judgments, Mark. I'm simply asking why you think it so outrageous that Asda should choose to sell wheelchairs, that's all. You can buy wheelchairs all over the place (and have been able to since the year dot) yet you seem to find it a failure of society that this is so.
I'm not criticising you - I'm just asking what the issue is that's all! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

'Fourth Time Around'....I never asked for your crutch, now don't ask for mine.....
In case you don't know the song, it's a parody of 'Norwegian Wood' by The Beatles. |

To return to topic, the products Asda are selling are provided by Mobilease
http://www.mobilease.co.uk/about.asp
You'll see from that site that they specialise in small and/or lightweight aids to mobility and disability, like grab rails, toilet seats, jar and bottle openers; the collapsible wheelchair is the largest item.
They are nearly all items which local council social services used to provide free of charge, given a nudge by one's GP or Age Concern; if you wanted to buy them then there have been a number of independent retailers, which you have to track down in Yellow Pages, or mail order from weekend newspapers and magazines.
Having Asda as an outlet (initially 75 stores are selling them) puts them in easier reach, in the current economic climate which has seen councils cutting such free services to all but those who cannot afford them. As with anything the Big Four supermarkets do, Asda are hoping that it will earn them a bob or two - I doubt whether they are actually shelling anything out, other than a little bit of space. _________________ Ron |

Mark, it's just those two comments together that may be confusing members.
Great idea - yes, a resource for the local community.
Shame that Asda have to do this - why a shame? If the government created some other resourece it would just spend taxpayers' money. Let Asda do it. Not a shame, just good community relations.
Asda shops also have pharmacies in them, is that a shame? Employing pharmacists and assistants. Providing valuable jobs, and a resource providing valuable advice on medications when the local surgeries are closed.

That's the point I was trying to make, John, except that you've hit the nail on the head more accurately that I did!
Mark's comment "it's a shame that Asda has to do this" just doesn't figure. Asda doesn't have to do anything - but what it does do it does because sees a commercial opportunity. If it didn't, its buyers wouldn't touch it.
Argos has been selling Wheelchairs as part of its "living aids" range for a long time, but Mark hasn't seen fit to deem it to be "a shame".
Hence my question "I can't see what the issue is".
And I can't. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |
