It's Radio Leeds playing Phil's 'Two Hearts' and the ineffectual 'Heatwave' on a weekend that grinds my gears!

I know what you mean. Phil's done some pretty good singing in his time (though not all of the time, by any means), but drumming is what he does best! |

I've seen Collins drumming many times since the early 70s and I've always admired his skill. I also saw his "big band" once and the standard of musicianship from everyone - including Collins himself - was superb.
Of course, the prerequisite skill of a drummer is to keep perfect time - and he does much more than that. That said, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page can only compare a drummer to John Bonham - who was probably the best rock drummer of his time - but that shouldn't denigrate Collins' own capabilities in any way. |

Actually, that's unfair. It was pretty darned good on "Crosstown Traffic" (I was listening to it yesterday as it played very loudly in my son's car!) and his "machine gun" style complemented the other two pretty well. |

Ok he wasn't crap for sure but I really don't think he was that good either.. I was watching a lot of Jimi's performances last night including the God awful Isle of Wight disaster.
Mitch's drumming was weak and... well, just all over the place.
I'm sure Jimi's most ardent fans will agree that the IoW show was pretty naff for whatever reason... there was virtually no communication between Jimi and Mitch. ( The terrible PA set up didn't help either ) no wonder Jimi said "maybe one day we'll get it back together" and threw his Strat down as he left the stage.
The studio tracks are fine but nothing like Ginger's or Bonham's standard.
and I say this as a true Hendrix fan..

I remember being on the Isle of Wight one year (probably 1970) when the festival was on and wishing my parents would take me there, being an avid Top Of The Pops watcher and loving all the noisy, uptempo tracks that were featured (and I still do have a bias for that kind of music, but I do embrace some other music these days) My parents wouldn't hear of it! Though I did manage to hear some of what was being played, but I had no idea who it was that was playing! I don't know what all the fuss was about. I don't think he plays music at any point of his show - there was certainly none, apart from the theme to Terry and June between 7.20 and 7.50

That's what they call "local radio" these days. Thanks to the way network broadsting servers work these days it's easy to administer. The playout list simply contains a segment which effectively tells the server to "play all the local station ads here" and it does - to each and every one of them! That's why all the so-called "local" stations originate from one server in one building many miles from the locality served by the "local radio station". Even the station idents and other "local" indentifiers are served up in this manner.
That's why I hate what's happening to "local radio" - it isn't local at all. Heart is the worst offender, but other tinpot stations like Smooth are (or will be) using the same technology. |

I think I remember reading somewhere that Smooth will generate as many as eight separate streams from Manchester; six local FM feeds, plus two for the national DAB service and the feed to Sky. I think the same piece said that separate news feeds would be part of the operation, too; presumably the same one or two readers recording the bulletins in the half hour before broadcast.
They're even networking community stations in some areas - it seems to me the complete antithesis of "community station"!

Yeah, the news was local, read by someone who had a stop-start speech impediment. Actually it was local mixed in with the national and sport, so we had a minor-ish traffic accident in Spalding, followed by drinking during pregnancy followed by backroom strife at Leicestershire County Cricket Club, followed by Cameron's Cuts, followed by a fight in a Nottingham pub followed by the Red Sox buying up Liverpool FC.
Lynn doubles up as weather girl though.
