'Something Wonderful' was not from Carousel as stated, but from another Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, The King And I

I'm surprised he didn't correct himself as he read it out unless, like me, he is not a fan of musicals. It wasn't a bad version he played but for me it has to be the original from the film...

Climb Every Mountain is one of those songs that has the hair on the back of my neck standing up every time.

Took me a little while to remember who else I had heard singing I Just Don't Understand the song Brian played by Ann Margaret

I'm just about halfway through this edition and the choices have been been good so far...would have preferred Lesley Gore's version of It's My Party although that I learn from this programme that hers was the cover after Helen Shapiro's version.

Great 3 in a Row from Mark Wynter on today's show, Almost Tomorrow, Go Away Little Girl and Venus In Blue Jeans.

Another seldom heard track, Summer Nights from Marianne Faithful.

Not a bad show this week.

I completely agree about Mark Wynter - one of the few early sixties artists whose music I really enjoy

However I thought the rest of the show was pretty mediocre Sad

Brian played an interesting record today, which I've never heard, neither is it on You Tube. It was Gerry Marsden - In The Year Of April.

I'd never heard that one before either, raver ...nice sound ..Gerry has a lovely voice. I had a quick look on Wiki and it is mentioned on there but nothing you can link to for further information

I liked the Seeker's one too ..that wasn't familiar to me,either ...lovely harmonies

I never tire of hearing All Alone Am I by Brenda Lee and it got me wondering if Radio 2 have ever done a programme about her and her songs.

I hadn't heard that Seekers song either, Becky. Was listening to Ken Bruce a few months ago, when this beautiful song came on. I didn't recognise the singer at first, as I was in another room...sounded a bit like Judy Collins. Unforgivable really , as Judith has one of those voices that get right into your soul. Thanks to the tracklisting, I found it was this...gorgeous song.

Seekers - Eriskay Love Lilt.

As for Brenda, I remember listening to this a while back...

Just played the Eriskay Love Lilt, it is indeed very pleasant and I've always loved Judith Durham's voice. Yes, it's similar to Judy Collins.

I enjoyed hearing that Gerry Marsden song on SOTS too, which I'd not heard of before. Recorded as late as 1968 when he was out of fashion.

Some records don't deserve to be found ...such is the case (imo) with Come Away Melinda by Barry St John (he supplied the voice for the very annoying "Mummy Mummy" bit too) that Brian played today.

On the other hand I did enjoy hearing Jake Thackrey with the delightful Lah-Di-Dah and The Marcels's arrangement of the old classic, Blue Moon is always, for me, a joy to hear.

I only caught the last hour of the programme this morning and looking at the playlist there are three from Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen so must listen again

I was intrigued to hear the request for 'Come Away Melinda' as the only track bearing that title I had heard of was from an early seventies album by one of my all time favourites rock bands 'Uriah Heep' - just wondered for one moment whether their track was a cover version but very pleased to report that it clearly isn't

The Uriah Heep track is melodic rock at its best whereas the track played this morning even made 'Barbie Girl' seem brilliant by comparison - what a load of rubbish Evil or Very Mad

Far too many obscurities as usual, but I loved Eternity's Children and 'Mrs Bluebird', a fabulous song and sort of a cross between The Cowsills and The Mamas and Papas, with lovely harmonies.

Sadly today's show was blighted by the usual Swern factual error

Great to hear a Flirtations track - and long overdue - but to say that they came originally from New York City is quite unbelievable

The Flirtations started life as The Gypsies in South Carolina and on the album mentioned today there is actually a track titled 'South Carolina' which was written for them by Wayne Bickerton about their home town at a time when they were living in Britain and feeling homesick

It rather begs the question as to whether Mr Swern has actually ever listened to the album in its entirety Rolling Eyes

No it's not just you. I looked right after the show and it doesn't seem to be there, although there is a Radio Times cover.....

I've noticed that occasionally some of the weekend shows don't get their playlists until a couple of days later. I find it odd as most of them are pre records so it shouldn't be a problem.

Update on SOTS playlist - it's up and also several others that were also missing. My email must have worked! Wink It's not the first time they've been missing from many of the weekend shows though.

Some great favourites of mine played this morning including,The Shirelles,Marv Johnson and Carole King + a couple of nice songs I liked that I've never heard before.....Tony and The Velvets with Sunday and Keith West with another song,On A Saturday from A Teenage Opera...pity that was never finished as I've liked both the offerings I've heard from it.

Admittedly I was half asleep for the first hour but it seemed pretty mediocre to me

But then I woke up and what a great second hour - a great three in a row from the best year in music IMHO - 1969 - and that absolutely superb track by Angel Pavement - that song should have been a Number One record = and that's real praise coming from a Lancastrian like me considering they hailed from York Smile

But the three in a row came from 1968! The excellent Legend Of Xanadu, and the awful Fire and nauseatingly catchy Bonnie And Clyde.

I agree, though, that 1969 was the best year for music, not just in the 60s but of all time.

Lots of obscurities today as usual, but there were some classics. Love Affair's Everlasting Love, The Walker Brothers' Another Tear Falls, and Dobie Gray's The In Crowd, a typical 60s song.

But the highlight was Sonny Charles And The Checkmates version of Proud Mary, a real belter of a Phil Spector production. Sound right up, windows open, sod the neighbours, this is music at its best. I looked at Wikipedia and noted that it has only been played twice on Radio 2 since 2008:today and by Mark Lamarr 5 years ago. Truly pathetic, Radio 2.

Getting rid of Mark Lamarr was not one of Radio 2's best moves. I used to enjoy his Alternative 60s show that he used to present along with a few other speciality shows. A truly knowledgeable presenter. He also did a good job sitting in on the, then, Jonathan Ross show on Saturdays. I also enjoyed the show he presented on Christmas Day for a few years in the mid 2000s.

It was better this week. Loved the 3 tracks that you mentioned.

Don't know why but the Julie Grant 'Count On Me', had me humming Gary Lewis and the Playboys 'Count Me In' all day....... Not the same song but rather similar.

I've just had a look at The Songs Lennon and McCartney Gave Away that it's on ...what a great album!.

Doesn't look like it,LEE

Lots to enjoy (for me) on this morning's programme ( Del Shannon had some wonderful 'noises' on his records) but the light, summery sound of The Cowsills singing The Rain The Park & Other Things was especially welcome on a rather miserable (weather wise) Saturday morning.

A fairly mediocre show I thought much as usual these days but it was rescued towards the end by that superb track by 'Cupid's Inspiration' and I thought the idea of a Eurovision 'Three in a Row' was quite clever Smile

As far as I know, he's doing a bit of live stuff and will be appearing at some festivals this Summer but he appears to have deliberately gone missing and has left his agency. I would guess he's still writing for Sean Lock and the like, but under his real name. Next time I meet someone who might know, I'll ask.

As mentioned by Becky and Ruddles, there was a blissful final ten minutes on SOTS: the wonderful The Rain The Park And Other Things, a lovely flowery summer song that can only be from 1967 (I'm guessing here).
I had never heard of it until SOTS played it about five years ago.
Thank God for (some) obscurities.

And then the magnificent My World by Cupids Inspiration which I've mentioned here before and on the old Radio 2 message board. Incredible to think it only reached no.32. It was certainly better than Yesterday Has Gone.

Today's SOTS was a good one loads of great tracks I thought.

Loved Richard Anthony 'If I Loved You' but wish it had been the French version. He did some lovely covers of Dusty tracks in the 60s.

Rainbow Cghaser is a truly underrated 60's track as are the artists who performed it Smile
