I heard Feedback, can't believe people do want CE although I can understand why they don't want RM. The man from Radio 2 says they are both 'brilliant broadcasters', I am listening to someone now on the i-player who really is..........Bill Kenwright. Very Happy

I enjoy Richard Madeley. Obviously the station was looking for someone to committ to cover without changing the presenters around everytime CE was off. We all liked Richard Allinson when he covered, but maybe can't committ to every holiday cover? This is probarly why we have for example who I enjoy : Chris Tarrant who committs to Steve Wright show and Patrick Kietly to Alan Carr show. It seems the station has decided to go down this road and it's not what the listeners want anymore.

You could be right Mark, but I suspect that we can't have Richard Allison because he was so popular when he covered CE for a week. I don't think it is seen as quite the thing for the cover to be more popular than the regular presenter and that is how it was then! Laughing

For those who can't be bothered to listen to feedback, Radio 2s Head of Programmes was defending the choice to use Richard Madeley as a stand in for Chris Evans.

As for some stand ins not being "what the listeners want" that's clearly a highly subjective matter. The BBC man said as much, adding that if a stand in wasn't working, they wouldn't use them again.

I think Richard Madeley does quite a good show really.
Where do people get the information that Richard Allinson was massively popular when he stood in last time?
Surely that is just their opinion.

As they say Freelancing presenters out is cheap way than having someone tied down and standing around waiting for a call. Does that mean Vanessa Feltz has lost out to Paddy O'Connell who covers for Jeremy now. ( Seems like it ), but hey she's on BBC London as well. BBC London can't keep freelancing presenters to cover for Vanessa, who is covering for Jeremy, seemed a little stupid idea when she was announced as the Early Breakfast presenter. Thats another story..

As for Madeley - he was really annoying, but Fiona Phillips was even worse. The two of them managed to really get me wound up at the start of the day, which is not a good thing.

Maybe Richard Allinson isn't a freelancer for Radio 2 now, as he's got himself a show. Easy way to stop the phone ringing. That could be blamed on Sarah Kennedy when it was the Richard Allinson Early Breakfast show for half a year. Laughing

Who does cover for sickness broadcasters? Maybe the closest one who lives in London.

Anyone sitting in for Chris has a tough act to follow, Richard M is very good at it in the main.

To be fair Angela, some letters in the RT and on feedback doesn't mean RA was massively popular.
There was obviously going to be people waiting in the traps to say how magnificent RA was just to have yet another dig at Chris Evans.
Remember it was mainly Mark Matthew who raved on about RA, most other people thought he was a competent if uninspiring jobbing dj.

How can it be fair to say that just because a sizeable number of people complimented RA on how well he did on the breakfast show there has to be an ulterior motive or some kind of hidden agenda that it's all being done as a way of having a go at Chris Evans?

Perhaps people just liked his show and perhaps they did prefer it to the normal offering and if that was the case I don't see why there should be a problem

It seems to me that the Evans heads must secretly know just how bad the normal breakfast show is otherwise why would they have this 'bee in their bonnet' about taking praise for any of his stand ins as being an automatic criticism of him

Perhaps the explanation is that they might have guilty consciences methinks but I long since gave up worrying about the state of the R2 breakfast show when there are now far superior alternatives available elsewhere to keep me entertained which explains why I hardly ever bother posting about the subject of CE any more Smile

I think all of the so-called adulation for RA standing in on the Breakfast Show was, all of the adulation. I.E Half a dozen or so people thought he was ok on the Breakfast Show and for some reason, probably internal politics within the BBC, but who knows, those letters were given a high priority in the RT and a wide dissemination and an “angle” across the popular press, making it “seem” like a general feeling when, it wasn’t. RA is ok, on the right show, at the right time, he’s just what you want but the weekday Breakfast Show is not the right show for him, occasionally as a one-off stand-in, he can pull it off but as a permanent gig, we’d be pulling our hair out by the end of the first week. RA is like a MkIII Cortina: when you see one, you think, oh cool beans! I remember those. You might even care to take one for a spin around the block but you’d soon be reminded just how dated they seem, how noisy they are, how clunky they feel, how they roll and slide all too easily on the bends and you can’t get your skis in them!

Well I know who I would prefer to listen to as a presenter and it isn't anyone who shouts and behaves like a schoolkid. Laughing
