I've yet to hear him on the radio. No reason why he shouldn't be good at it, so long as he doesn't bring his missus along Smile

I've enjoyed him standing in for Zoe Ball. Very Happy , a pity he's not on next week Sad

He doesn't rely on endless texting to trivial topics, has some interesting things to say, OK I may not agree with everything but that's not a problem, and some may think he's cheesy.

I don't think he would be good full time but as a standin he's OK, there are a lot worse standins used Very Happy

Shame, he's not my cup of tea but there you go. At this rate Radio 2 soon won't be either!

Ah - well, I've only heard him on R2 when he was sitting in for Sarah Kennedy and I was pleasantly surprised then.

Bit unsure of him since he did that awful 'Blair did not lie' video for Newsnight. Whatever your views on Iraq are, it was an awful piece of film.

I won't hold that against him though, and will listen. Do we know when Mayo is off on holiday?

He didn't say when it would be, Nick, just that, the next time we hear him on R2 he "would be sitting in for that nice man who does Drivetime".

He was quite good when he stood in for Sarah as well so he should be OK on drivetime.

Heard him for the first time this morning, just the last 20 mins and that he would be doing Drivetime for Simon.

He sounded okay but they are 2 different type of shows so time will tell.

What's the matter with Alex Lester,he has filled for Wogan has a personality plays some really good stuff instead we get a c or should i say a d list celeb coming on.Bob Harris is another that comes to mind who would do a good job.Just makes me mad to bring people in when the talent is already there

The problem with having Alex as a stand-in for drivetime, LP, is that doing so would contravine the first rule of stand-ins, which are never allowed to be better than the person they are standing-in for, oh no, that would never do. Smile Lovely though it would be to have Alex on drivetime for a couple of weeks, it would spoil the listeners for evermore, they'd spend the rest of their days glued on the i-player pining for him to be on during the day.

Of course, LP, the second rule of stand-ins, is that Rule number 1 doesn’t apply at Christmas. At Christmas stand-ins have to emulate all that we like and dislike about the festive season. For example:

Richard Allinson gets a lot of stand in work at Christmas cos he’s like mince pies, the first one is ok , then the second is a bit sickly and by the end of the 12 days , you can’t give em away, even the birds won’t eat the things.

Those pre-recorded celebrity presented programmes are like those relatives who you see very infrequently, they come along , talk about themselves, the size of their new mountain bike and oh what fun we had ski-ing to the point where you’d like to strangle them, then they disappear without even saying thank you for the large of box of mince pies you gave them.

Then there’s that special present, chosen just for you; you pick it up, gently shake it to see if it rattles, nibble it a little- to make sure that it’s real, unwrap it carefully, your mind full of racing thoughts, will it be the one thing that is the answer to all my dreams and wishes? You take off the wrapping, carefully open the box then gaze lovingly at the most precious gift that is Alex Lester on the Dawn Patrol.

Dawn Patrol is many things, including, I find, a song by Megadeath - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lAi-KfyEaM Laughing but I'm not sure Sarah keeps the house name.

I'm sure Alex would do Drivetime very well, but he'd sound like a fish out of water, because he wouldn't be able to do what he does during the BTOTD show, which can sometimes have quite adult threads.

I love the blog - he just can't resist having a go at places like this
"This is why I find it rather sad sometimes that people write off music, musicians, radio, TV shows as "rubbish", and they "demand" changes via message boards and letters to the newspapers just because they don't personally like it."

Just for Christmas , MiS. Smile

I do have a feeling in my bones though, mornings aren't quite right at the moment. I sense a change of some sort. Don't panic, I have no knowledge of what it may be, it's just the odd things people have said, the odd comment here and there- put em all together and bingo! I feel like it's match point in the third set of the mens' singles, it could all be over in after the next serve , equally it could be another two sets of hard slog.

I think there are a lot of rumours Rachel, then they get expanded upon and then it all seems to be fact. Digital Spy seem to breed them, not that I look on there more than once in a blue moon!

Ron, I quite like this bit.

We are settling into the new routine with the change of hours. I know it is not ideal. Many of you have pointed out that you are not enjoying the early finish. Hopefully, though, this is not for ever.

Laughing So one day he might thank Sarah for keeping the seat warm after five.

Still, the early finish allows him a quick, cheap, and quiet getaway when he needs it.

Richard Madely has obviously been at R2 today; according to this Tweet (see link below). He said it would be next month sometime, so presumably (run up to) Easter cover.

His first track ought to be Pete Atkin's 'The Flowers & The Wine', given his wine-nicking activities.

That or the Beatles's 'Slow Down' as he talks terribly fast!

In the dim & distant past (early part of Johnnie Walker's tenure) Alex has sat in on Drivetime, just as he has for Ken Bruce on occasion. One year he even did the Steve Wright spot on a bank holiday.

Alex actually sat in for Chris on Drivetime two years ago over Easter. It was Good Friday and Easter Monday so not a 'proper' Drivetime show but still it was on between 5 & 7. I think he called the show Alex's Jukebox - and he devoted the show to playing music he enjoys with nothing off the playlist. Really enjoyable shows. I was holed up in my flat that weekend working on a deadline, and it was a happy little haven that Alex provided for me.

Re:celebrity presenters. The description of them being like relatives who pop in and brag about where they went on holiday was a perfect summing up of Catherine Tate laughing like an idiot while David Tennant drove the desk, it seemed.

I'm surprised they didn't nip out for fish and chips later, but that's another story.

Mark, I'm beginning to suspect your interests revolve around people called Richard. Sorry but I think he sounds awful. He has that 'trying to be cool' vibe that I find so off-putting. Horses for courses, though.

Quite agree-he is trying too hard.

Switched him off after an hour-the music played is very average imo.

Most shows play the same music which Richard played today. So the music has put you off, but did the content of the show switch the dial?

Simply I found him boring. Just not my cup of tea.

Makes you realise what a good presenter Simon Mayo is.

Would like to have heard Bob Harris on Drivetime today.
