Yes, you're right of course.. it is a memory jogger with some pleasant surprises too..
I have to admit though, my heart sinks when "the year" is announced as anything past the 80s.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Today is 1968. What a great year. Amen Corner, Status Quo, Louis Armstrong. Memories of being 15 again at the local rugby club disco illegally drinking Woodpecker. |

It is Graham, I was still at school then. Memories of youth club discos for me as well!

I was 12 3/4 years old, and it was precisely the time, when I started buying Record Mirror, Melody Maker, NME and sometimes, Disc and Music Echo.
I used to flick my school tie whenever Xanadu came on...backcombed my hair a la Dave Dee...but all that aside, I'm just glad I grew up in the sixties. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Same for me Helen - great memories of Saturday night discos at the local St John's Ambulance Brigade unit
A good place to hold them as the odd fight used to break out now and then _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Good one on Saturday from two top years: 1967 and 1990. The Beatles! The Monkees! Alan Price! They Might Be Giants! The B-52s! Madonna!
And Candy Flip. Oh well. |

Yes, 1967 was a good year. Nice to hear The Move (I Can Hear The Grass Grow) and Pink Floyd (Arnold Layne). Hendrix, The Who and Jeff Beck were also in the charts that month but I can't see Blackburn playing them.
It was certainly a year of transition. The Summer Of Love had not yet arrived and there was some awful rubbish from Harry Secombe, Englebert and Cliff. |

I love the Charlie Chaplin song that Harry Secombe sang..it's a glorious song to sing along with ..and the one by Cliff is one of his lovely ballads ..as far as I'm concerned ...and Please Release Me ....not much wrong with that ....just goes to show you can't please all of the people all of the time |

Becky: I loved Petula's version of This Is My Song! I guess she sang it with some passion whereas Harry Secombe just bellowed it out.
Though I couldn't stand Release Me, I loved The Last Waltz. So I'm certainly not anti slushy ballads, in case anyone thinks I am! |

I was sure I'd replied to this thread but it's not here
Anyway I just wanted to say I thought Harry Secombe's version was a bit different from Petula's, the words sounded different but maybe it's just me having a memory lapse!

I really enjoyed the first hour today. My dad bought quite a few of these singles in 1964 and it brought back happy memories as he is no longer with us. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I enjoyed 1964 today, the time when British groups started taking over our charts from the Americans. It was also when TOTP and Ready Steady Go burst onto the scene to introduce us to the new music.
I bought my first record in April 64: Tell Me When by The Applejacks. I still have it in the orange Decca sleeve. |

My copy is in the loft Schidzoid! A great set of songs as you say, things seemed very vibrant back then to an innocent schoolgirl!

Helen: I just love Gerry And The Pacemakers' 'Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying' and Roy Orbison's 'It's Over'. Also 'Everything's Alright' by The Mojos which I still have somewhere.
It all seemed so new at the time (though some songs were covers of course). |

Penned by Gerry himself that's a beautiful song ...he has a lovely voice...
Have just caught up with this programme....just the job to cheer on a dull, wet Sunday morning.....some great songs bringing back some great memories...

That was one great chart..a very exciting time..probably the peak of Merseybeat. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me. One great record after another. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Think you're right about the Mersey peak and it was just before Tamla Motown really got known about as well.

Yes great to see Tony back so soon but he does still sound a bit under the weather
I notice he slightly slipped up when introducing the track 'Walk On the Wild Side' - did I hear him correctly when he said it was produced by David Bowie and Mark Ronson?
I think Mark would merely have been a twinkle in his dad's eye back in 1973 - he obviously meant to say Mick Ronson from the Spiders from Mars and later Uriah Heep
I think on this occasion however its entirely understandable and excusable and I'm thoroughly enjoying the show and having Tony back _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Yes he understandably doesn't sound quite himself, but as you say good to have him back. Hope he isn't overdoing things though.

If my memory is correct they no longer have them in the R2 studios. When they moved from the old ones I recall JV playing what he suspected would be the last vinyl record on his show. JW and Terry Wogan had already moved to the new studio and their old one was I think the last one to have a turntable.
Some may recall David Jacobs popping into Jeremy's studio at the end of his show on a certain day of the week. I'm guessing he recorded his Sunday night show right after JV had finished. The day I was there Paul Jones was doing the same as he was in and out a few times.

Nice bit of Radio 2 history recalling there,Helen....(if there was a thumbs up smiley I would have put it here )
Paul Jones was in a documentary,I watched, on BBC the other night ....London Calling with Jools Holland...he's one of the lucky ones who doesn't look that much different to what he did in the sixties... |

Thanks Becky!
Paul definitely looked as good as he did in the 60s , his skin was a lot clearer than it was back then.

That's right. The reason is that analogue recordings don't carry embedded meta-data which is used throughout the production and transmission chain to keep tabs on what's playing - and that goes right through to the receiver where a track can be visually identified. It's pretty much each broadcaster's policy to digitise analogue sources first and then add them to the library prior to production in order that this data can be added.
John Peel would, of course, be turning in his grave I suspect, as he loved the vinyl record and insisted in playing "direct from source"! |

So there is, and I think it's Ken Bruce's studio that they use. They must have had an afterthought sometime later.

Notice that it's in the side rack area, not built onto the main desk as used to be the case. It's probably there to perform those occasional transfer as I mentioned above. |
