I don't know the exact figures but from what I can tell the 6-8am ratings have gone up a bit on what was there before, but the 8am-10am ratings are down considerably from when Brian Matthews was in the slot. The only point Dermot gets anywhere near Matthews ratings is in the last half-hour when people start turning on for Graham Norton.

Ratings for Pick of The Pops have gone up under Gambo, but listeners preferred Blackburn! Go figure...

Thanks Ian. Why on earth they didn't leave SOTS where it was heaven only knows. Rolling Eyes

It's interesting that since the change ratings for pretty much every Saturday slot have gone up, but the 8-10 slot is up to 25% down on what it used to be.

That's quite a big slice.

Well here's a new experience.....
Following a knock on my door a few days ago by Ipsos MORI, my household is actually contributing to the RAJAR figures for this week!

Well, if they knocked on my door I'd give them a piece of my mind about Radio 2,eg why does the moronic Steve Wright talk so much over the songs, why does Ken Bruce play such bland music, why does Trevor Nelson make so many boorish references to Chelsea FC, why does Jeremy Vine play the awful Elvis Costello so much (ditto Johnnie Walker and the Eagles). What is the point of Jo Whiley?
Sorry, rant over.

Back in 2009 (Blimey, almost 10 years ago!! Shocked ) I was 'Rajared'. I remember saying to the man that I wasn't going to help Chris Evans. The man just smiled! A fat lot of good that did me! Of course they don't write the BBC's policy, just interested in what we do enjoy listening to rather than don't, and not just on the BBC stations.

I've twice given them what I listen to, most recently in 2004 I think and prior to that sometime in the mid 90s if I remember correctly.

Well it's done.....
Not much encouragement for Radio 2 in my response, I'm afraid.
Last week was dominated by 6Music, Radio 4 and Test Match Special.

Also, we are now hooked up to Deezer and Spotify via Sonos. Having pretty much all music ever recorded at your fingertips makes you less inclined to put up with 'Talk Radio 2' - Where all your favourite celebrities sell you their latest books/films/shows.

Latest RAJARs out today and Radio 2's audience has dropped to it's lowest level since 2012. No word on Drivetime's figures, but Chris Evans has dropped to 8.9m from 9.4m in the same quarter last year, and the station as a whole is down nearly 1 million from the same period of 2017.

Elsewhere, Radio 1 is up now they've removed Grimmy from breakfast, and Nick Ferrari on LBC, Chris Moyles on Radio X and Dave Berry on Absolute saw their audiences go up, while Kiss and Capital's breakfasts went down.

BBC 6 Music beat it's previous highest ratings which means 2017 has been it's most successful year ever. Naturally, such a winning formula is about to be broken up by the same BBC bosses who have masterminded Radio 2's recent disasters...

Selective Rajaring (if that's a word) there. Is there anywhere you can see a full, unabridged list,I wonder.

I'd love to know but sadly access to the full list costs £2000 + VAT a year which is a bit out of my price range. Stations get the results a day early so they can prepare their press releases to highlight what they want, and the media just runs with it, sadly.

Shocked
Looking Rajar up I see it's jointly owned by the BBC and the Radiocentre, so seeing as we fund the BBC don't we have the right to see the Rajars in full?

Could a freedom of information act be invoked?

I would guess the reply would be that it's commercially-sensitive information. Might be worth a go, though.

Right... sent it off. We'll see in 20 days whether they tell me anything!

I would read into this that the figures were not good and so they have something to hide! (Or they have been asked to bury the news.)

New figures out today, and nearly all the BBC stations have dropped listeners (partly thanks to an overall drop in radio listening)

Radio 1’s audience is down from 9.8m at the end of 2017 to 9.37m at the end of 2018

Radio 2 is down from 15.49m a year ago to 14.89m

Radio 3 down from 1.95m to 1.83m

Radio 4 down from 11.25m to 10.48m

5Live down from 5.4m a year ago to 4.9m

6 Music down from 2.34m to 2.29m

Radio 4 Extra down to 2.13 million listeners per week from 2.26m

Radio 2 has dropped 3.9% year-on-year, although Chris Evans breakfast show went up for it's final quarter. He was on 9.1m when he left, while his new station Virgin was on 44,000 (down 7.3% y-o-y).

Greg James has taken the Radio 1 breakfast figures back up now Grimshaw has left. There's a surprise! Rolling Eyes

I can't find a mention of Radio 2's Drivetime figures.

Bob Shennan, Director of BBC Radio and Music, said: “It’s brilliant that our new and fresh Radio 1 Breakfast Show is doing so well, on air as well as digitally on BBC Sounds, social media and YouTube. Greg James is a superb DJ and we know his listeners love the show. We can see that a busy few months for listeners in the run up to Christmas has impacted on all radio listening in the UK, but despite that our radio breakfast shows demonstrate what an important role live radio still plays in people’s daily lives with millions waking up to BBC Radio, whether it’s for brilliant music, great guests or comprehensive news coverage."

Also of interest to me was that Bauer have replaced Manchester's Key103 with Hits Radio and lost 30% of the audience! Haha! That's quite some rebrand.

Seen a tweet saying Richard Allinson's Drivetime figures are up and he kept mentioning that there were a lot of 'new listeners' tonight. Not seen any figures though.

Just saw this....whether it's to be believed is another matter. Fact is, it wasn't a success, otherwise it'd still be on.

And as for the word 'methinks'....arrgh.

He did say in his weekend interview that the figures were good and they'd asked him and Jo to carry on but ultimately he felt BBC Radio 2's Management no longer had faith in him so he decided to leave.

Well, this is a more informed article than the previous one.

One more thing Bob Shennan, according to this, is a 'Controller'. My 20 month old Grandson, Teddy, is mad about Thomas the Tank Engine. The Fat Controller is the only other being, real or fiction, who has this self-serving title, to my knowledge. The Fat Controller usually ends up getting cream or other splattery stuff on his suit. But as yet, no egg on his face.

Sorry for the cross posting but was unsure where to put these exactly but they sum up I think most of our thoughts here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just read these comments in the Culture section of today's Sunday Times.

From the You Say section and covering 2 days (there are max 3 comments in the small box on each days schedules.

"Who murdered Radio 2? With one or two exceptions it is reduced to a third rate local station."

"Look on the bright side, at least Zoe Ball won't be standing in for Ken Bruce when he is on a break. I now listen to Radio Wales in the mornings."

"Where did the BBC find Rylan Clark-Neal? Can they send him back please"

And lastly

"The demise if the 5-7pm Radio 2 slot. Oh, Simon Mayo, wherefore art thou?
Another programm to switch off. I can't bear it any longer."

All spot on and exactly my thoughts so it was worth typing them out!

I don't think I've seen so many negative comments in one place before.

While I agree with a couple of the comments seeing as The Sunday Times are bankrolling Chris Evans show on Virgin, I'm not sure they're an entirely unbiased commentator!

There are names of people supplying the comments Ian, and don't forget Gillian Reynolds is their radio columnist. The 'You Say' is normally dominated by TV comments and I've not seen so many radio themed remarks in a long time. I've been away for 2 weeks so not sure if something written during that time could have sparked them off.

'Diddy' David Hamilton wrote recently that Radio 2 was in danger of losing listeners if it insisted on not playing 60s music in an attempt to corner the younger listener.

How right he is.

While I don't trust the Sunday Times I do have to agree that his show is awful and completely out-of-place on Radio 2. He's like a very poor man's Alan Carr but without the self-awareness or broadcasting skills.

What puzzles me is on weekdays they've been keen to put women in presenting slots but here they've replaced a woman with a man. When Angela Scanlon filled in a few weeks ago she was much better.

The latest RAJAR listening figures are out and Zoe Ball is just 18,000 down on the rating she inherited from Chris Evans. Evans himself has more-than doubled Virgin's breakfast ratings (to 1.08m) so if any listeners followed him from Radio 2 Ball has replaced them. Zoe is on 9.047m and Radio 2 itself is 57,000 down from this time last year but still way ahead with 15.356m listeners.

On 6Music, Lauren Laverne's show gets 1.28m and Radcliffe & Maconie's new breakfast show gets 741,000. Both are increases on the previous slot, but overall the station is down year-on-year.

Radio 3, 5Live and Radio 4 Extra have all gone up.

In commercial radio, Global stations are the 4 biggest with Heart (9.655m), Capital (8.172m), Smooth (5.704m) and Classic (5.288m) ahead of Kiss (5.215m), Magic (4.108m) and talkSPORT (3.3m).

Bauer rebranded loads of local stations to create Greatest Hits Radio (led by Mark Goodier in the mid-morning slot) with disastrous results. All stations have lost listeners compared to their previous local incarnations - for instance Key 103 in Manchester has gone from 105,000 listeners to 30,000 in the space of 6 months! Most of their other stations (such as Rock FM, Radio Aire, Metro Radio) have lost listeners too. There'll be some presenters losing their parking space tomorrow!

Although I never have liked Chris Evans I'm glad that he's doing well at Virgin. He plays good music, whereas Zoe Ball is too 'girly' for me: 'gorgeous Carol Kirkwood', 'gorgeous Sara Cox' etc. Yuk.

As for Greatest Hits Radio, no wonder they are losing listeners if they refuse (like Radio 2 daytime) to play 60s music. There is only so much Baker Street and Solsbury Hill I can take.

My television was tuned to Radio 2 when I turned it on the other night. Sara was asking people to phone in and tell of their experiences of being found with their trousers down...( I think it was that)...needless to say I didn't hear much more. Rolling Eyes Definitely not for me.

I despair of Radio 2 these days, as there are so few programmes that I listen to.

I would have done the same with Sara Cox as you did Becky. The mind boggles as to what goes on in people's lives........ Rolling Eyes

Arise King Ken!

New RAJARs reveal Ken Bruce has the most popular show on Radio 2... because everyone else has lost listeners! Ken now has 8.5m, while Zoe Ball has dropped to 8.2m - the breakfast slot's lowest figure since 2010.

Listeners seem to have spread about a bit - Classic FM breakfast is up 250,000 while Radio 1, 1Extra, 6Music, Radio 4, Chris Moyles, Chris Evans, have all seen breakfast boosts.

Roman Kemp now gets 3.7m listeners with his national Capital FM breakfast show but that's actually down from 4m when the stations had local presenters. Same at Heart and The Hits, with the latter losing 23% of it's audience now it's national rather than lots of locals.

I'm not surprised and I hope the fall continues and then maybe those so called 'know it alls' will perhaps realise what Radio 2 is supposed to be about.

As you say well done Ken!
