I do not post on here anymore but i do browse but i find im banned from the R2 message board so here i go. I have a question its probably unanswerable but who or what group is Scott Nelson? He has a facebook page that declares he is proud to be an Internet troll but is at present on 'news and views' is arguing he is not. He is supposed to be post moderated but posts the same thing time and again with no hint of 'peta' stepping on him as anyone who breaks the seemingly extremely elastic house rules. Are the postings of scott nelson designed to try out BBC managements 'blue sky thinking' on an unsuspecting public by posting fantasy schedules and getting us to argue the toss thus giving them ideas of hoe to ponce about with the station? Or is it the actions of a moderator who posts totally antaganostic items to stir up controversy thus keeping a pretty stale board active. Another question is do you think 'Scott' has multiple identities on the boards thus giving credence to whoever he/she/ they post? which again points to insider help on the R2 message board.

Oh dear, you must have said something negative about Chris Evans or called Scott an idiot.

No idea who or what Scott is- but someone of that name used to post on here.
I suspect

Yes, he describes himself as a "civil servant" which may be code for "works at the BBC" but he really can be a pain in the arse. Even if the objective is to keep the board active he must have driven away more people than have contributed. There is just no point to anything he says.

John may not like the existence of this thread since the aforementioned person has a history of causing havoc on all the radio-related forums, including this one, so he may decide to chop this thread for fear of waving a red rag at the bull! I can't say I blame him, to be honest.

However, my recollection is that The Troll (for that is what he is) works for the Jobcentre agency somewhere in Essex. In the manner he has used multiple identities and stirs up no end of trouble with his weird views.

I think you're right about the BBC R2MB moderation policy; I think the only thing that has spared him is his supportive posting in defence of Chris Evans' breakfast show. No doubt he's been jumping up and down with glee at the announcement of Sarah Kennedy's departure.

However, quite why or how he's managed to survive the mods on the messageboard is beyond me. I can only think there's some kind of conspiracy going on between him and the admins.

And if you make a complaint about the moderating you find your account restricted or banned.

Take it further you're referred back to the board's moderators, so they can sweep it under the carpet.

Its obvious trolling, and the amount of threads and posts hidden is disgraceful, and there's only one person to blame for it.

I reckon he's allowed to say what he wants because it stimulates debate and keeps the mods in a job - particularly as the BBC is looking for areas to cut funding.

Whatever the reason, its making that forum and the moderators - especially Peta - look a laughing stock.

I was banned for calling into question the practice of being banned on a forum then re appearing under another identity saying it was the equivalent of going into a pub you are banned from wearing a false moustache and comedy wig. If this thread causes offence by all means delete it i wont be miffed.

Some people don't have a sense of humour do they? They should be thanking you, not banning you. I think they're paranoid- they use IP addresses to identify people but that doesn't always work.

I was once banned from a forum for having an alleged eleven active accounts - like I'd have time to be eleven different people - the eleven of us all had the same IP address because we all joined the forum at work and posted mainly at work - it was my team, we were on a mainframe system with only one internet server.

Interestingly, I suffered the exact same fate due to three members of my household posting on BBC messageboards (not just R2's but stuff across the BBC). Having been banned once, I then used a different login and discovered that everything that used my static IP address (it's not dynamic like many are) was banned from submitting to all BBC "interactive" online utilities. When I questioned this with the admin, the response was "yeah right, so a different person is posting from your IP address. We believe you...".

My reply ended with the word "off".

Colin,

Can you explain a bit more about the dynamic ISP addresses please? I've heard about it but ages ago.

Wish we had a Techical part to this forum then we'd know where to go for info we'd read but only half digested if you get my drift!

Helen - as you probably know, your ISP assigns your account connection to the internet an IP address which is unique. If the ISP decides that the IP address should never change (ie: it's always "yours") then it's a Static IP.

However, many ISPs have their internet gateways assign a new IP address with each logon session. This is done to protect your connection from determined hackers and to assist you in hiding your tracks (in addition to dissuading you from running a web server on your account!). This issuing of an IP address from the ISP's "pool" of IP addresses is called allocating IPs dynamically.

However, some of the larger ISPs are changing this policy now; at home I use O2 and they've assigned me a static, rather than dynamic, IP address on the grounds that people like Scott Nelson are contaminating the pool by encouraging lots of web hosts (eg: the BBC) to block their IP address - as has happened to me. The more this goes on the greater the contamination of the pool, and given that an ISP is allocated a finite number of IPs it's becoming a real problem.

Until very recently, O2 was offering fixed IP as an option but it now appears (from my own experience) that it's now the default with new consumer accounts.

If you wish to keep an eye on your IP address or check your connection speed, a good site is ThinkBroadand.com. See here for your own IP address info:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ip.html

The speed test is really good, too:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

You'll need to register for the latter, but they collate information and anonymously supply the main ISPs with data as a means of reminding them that they're not fulfilling their obligations!

Hope that helps.

Thanks Colin!

I already use thinkbroadband (first used it when it was called ADSL), it's a good site and I got some help from one of their founders when I had ISP problems 18 months ago.

Mine is dynamic as I've just checked my list of speed tests over the years.

Thanks again for the info.

Hi,

I'm not going to close this thread as there's nothing inflammatory in the content and I can't imaginbe Scott being bothered about what has been said. He usually e-mails me if offended.

As I have also been banned form R2MB (complaining about BBC ageism on forums) I'll leave this thread open so that Peta can come and explain or defend her actions - she IS a member of this forum but has chosen not to post so far.

Has someone been complaining John? I've not seen anything that specifically mentions this board. I haven't been on there much at all today though.

Really? I'm surprised as I've not noticed a post from you that could be construed as being offensive or in breach of MB rules. All the more surprising considering that "he" is still allowed to post there. I'm staggered.

Thanks for not deleting the thread, what i cannot comprehend is why can one poster (or group of posters) such as the entity 'scott nelson' be allowed to flagrantly ruin a public funded message board. Everything is inflammatory or put in such way to provoke a response and all that is posted is designed to wind people up. Despite my revulsion at what the rag prints i want tht Daily Mail to run an article on it.

My repeated messages, complaining about ageist references to presenters and their listeners, was deemed trolling by the mods, but I expect Peta instructed them to respond in that manner.

Since then she has not responded to messages I sent to Radio2.hosts@bbc.co.uk yet had previously been very appreciative of discussion from me regarding trolling activity at their MB.

The thing is, that if any paper ran an article on it, wouldn't this be exactly what he (or anyone else like him) wanted in order to to boost his, already oversized ego? Hasn't he already stated somewhere that he wants to be the 'world's no 1 troll'? I think that that if this were to appear in a newspaper (I suspect that it would have to be on the slowest of news days!) he would see it as a huge step to achieving that saddest of aims.
The phrase 'No such thing as bad publicity' springs to my mind.

The place is falling apart, there are so many locked threads and dozens if not hundreds of deleted posts - especially in the Sarah Kennedy - Daily Telegraph one.

I love how certain posts are removed, yet Nelson's quotes of them in his replies are left for all to see.

Agreed, Gibbo. I'm now banned from R2MB but still haven't received an e-mail telling me why. All I did was point out that Mr Nelson is a troll and illustrated that quite clearly. Sadly the post was removed Crying or Very sad

I wonder if I'll be invited back the way he apparently was. Maybe if I make a post saying I was pissed at the time of posting all will be forgiven.

Before I was banned my display name was deleted (I wonder who would have brought it to the host's/mods' attention) I've been posting there for months under that name so surely it's not jumped out as offensive.

Anyways sorry to join the community with a rant but had to get it off my chest.

Eric, I'm sure I'm not the only one to be pleased that you did join with a rant (it's called "hitting the ground running", I suppose) because it proves that the R2MB is being managed appallingly - and certainly not in the interests of the licence-fee-paying users!

The way things are going, the R2 posters will soon all be on here, leaving the troll to argue with himself, but doesn't he do that anyway?

I used to wonder as he did use different names in the distant past but I don't think he is doing it now. There is one poster (can't think of the name) who posts in very similar style but of course it could just be coincidence!

He did confide in me once that he would sometimes log in to the old R2MB with as many as 6 or 7 identities simultaneously ("Larry Mann", "Phil Urapitus" etc etc).

It was quite amusing watching one of his alter-egos being sarcastic and rude to another. Are the men in white coats aware? Smile

I think its time for me to pack this in really,i have been reading his posts using the name 'martin scott' and amongst his posts there is a thread saying how much he enjoys Russell Davies show and Alan Titchmarsh. i deal with some really unpleasant people in my job and have developed an internal ignore button for them, i am going to do it to nelson and the R2Mb and get my life back. Very Happy

Nothing civil about him.....

Just 28 posts on this thread and on it are 3 posters recently banned from the Radio 2 messageboards and the golden boy continues to have his own way.......it's absolutely crazy.

Can I throw in my two-pennoth worth?

I'm new here, but have come across Nelson's inane ramblings elsewhere, and simply can't stand him.

I also run my own message board. Usually we need little in the way of moderation, as the users can be trusted. There's also the advantage of knowing many of them for several years. However recently I've been hit by a similar troll to Nelson whose main mode of operation is to impersonate the posting style of other users, often using more than one account at once. His posts cause his new identities to get banned as soon as they're created, but he seems to easily acquire new E-mail addresses to hide behind.

I wonder if he belongs to the same trolling communities as Nelson?

I didn't know the R2 board was back up after the fiasco of a couple of years ago. It when only when I saw the thread about Peta's imoertinent reply to Helen that I went to have a look.

Jeez, talk about a time-warp. It's like I had borrowed the Tardis and went back in time. I can't believe he's still posting exactly the same arrogant rubbish that he was years ago. How can anyone be that obsessed by a radio station. Pity his poor family having to live with him

Confusing!

I'm in pre-mod since last weekend for simply "suggesting Lynn Parsons be offered the Dawn Patrol Show on a permanent basis".

I think the BBC message boards are a complete joke especially as Nelson is allowed to run riot most of the time.

If your name is still shown on your past messages then you are really suspended not banned, and if you are suspended then there should be a mod e-mail stating why.

The hosts stopped replying to me in June.
